Local services and rules
Moving to High Point: who to call and what the city asks.
High Point sweeps the Central Business District extra times during the fall and spring furniture markets, on top of its normal routes. Yard waste must be set out in a City-approved yard waste cart, paper bags or bundles, and plastic bags are not collected. On rented or leased property, tenants cannot sign for outdoor lighting; only the owner may do so.
Street sweeping and the snow route map
The City sweeps curb and gutter streets year-round. For winter weather, it publishes an interactive snow route map where a resident can type an address to see the closest snow route.
Utility set-up fees and deposits
A new resident sets up utility service through the Customer Service Call Center at 336-883-3111. The City also has an online Start Service page for a new resident who needs utility service established in their name. A $25 set-up fee establishes water service and is placed on the first month's bill.
The City charges an initial deposit when a new or existing account is opened at a new location. The residential electric service deposit is $125. The sewer service deposit is a flat $50, and the water deposit depends on the size of the line. Customers outside the city limits pay two times the inside deposit for water and sewer.
A person who must pay a deposit can instead supply a letter showing excellent credit for 12 current months with another utility. The City may also transfer a deposit from one address to the address a customer is moving to.
Weekly garbage and the City-owned recycling cart
Household garbage is picked up once a week in a City-approved roll-out cart, with collection starting at 6 a.m. According to the collection schedule, garbage and yard waste are collected weekly, while recycling and bulk items are collected every other week, on the same weekday as other waste.
The green 95-gallon recycling cart belongs to the City and stays at the address for the next resident. An extra cart costs $70, and a maximum of 2 carts are serviced at each residence.
Bulky item pickup
The City picks up occasional large items such as a sofa, chair, mattress, carpet or appliance on the same day as recycling. Bulky items pickup is not meant for a whole house clean out. Bulky items must not be mixed with limbs, yard waste or recyclables in the same pile, and any waste from a contractor must be removed by that contractor.
Drop-off sites and household hazardous waste events
The City lists recycling-only drop-off sites, including Fire Station #1 at 508 Centennial St. and the Ingleside Compost Facility at 3001 Ingleside Dr. Curbside pickup of electronics is not available in High Point.
The City holds household hazardous waste collection events three times a year, in March, May and November, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 1401 E. Martin Luther King, Jr. Dr. Guilford County residents may also use the household hazardous waste collection center at 2750 Patterson Avenue, Greensboro, phone 336-373-2196.
Attendance zones and the High Point Public Library card
High Point lies in Guilford, Davidson, Forsyth and Randolph counties. Guilford County Schools assigns students by the attendance zone where the parent or guardian lives, and proof of residence can be an official lease agreement in the parent's name.
A High Point Public Library card is requested at the Lending Desk or Customer Service Desk on the first floor. Cards are not issued in the last 30 minutes before closing. A new cardholder is asked for photo identification with proof of current address.
Flood insurance and neighborhood associations
High Point participates in the National Flood Insurance Program, and the owner of a property in a Special Flood Hazard Area is required to buy flood insurance. The City's Community and Neighborhood Development Division works with neighborhood associations and offers a sign-up form for information about a particular association.
Transit call center and Piedmont Triad International Airport
A transit call center representative can be reached between 6:30 AM and 8:00 PM Monday to Friday at 336-889-7433. Piedmont Triad International Airport (PTI) sits between Greensboro, Winston-Salem and High Point, where I-40, I-85 and I-73/I-74 converge.
