Local services and rules

Moving to Hackensack: who to call and what the city asks.

Hackensack is the county seat of Bergen County, New Jersey. The city treats any metal item or appliance as a white good, a category that includes stoves, refrigerators, washers, dryers and metal desks. A community-wide city ordinance regulates most tree removals on property in the city, and a form goes to the Department of Public Works before trees are removed. Rubbish is collected every other Wednesday, with the city split into two groups of routes that alternate weeks.

Parking rules and the ParkMobile app

Parking rules are enforced city-wide Monday through Saturday. Parking in the city can be paid through the ParkMobile app, available for iPhone and Android. Monthly parking permits for municipal lots and decks are issued through the Police Department. The Parking Utility Office is in the DPW Building at 120 East Broadway.

Recycling routes and yard waste

Recycling is collected by route, on one weekday each week from Monday through Friday. Yard waste is collected on the same day as a household's recycling pickup. A city ordinance requires anyone who receives city garbage collection to recycle commingled containers, corrugated cardboard, newspaper and junk mail.

The Sanitation and Recycling Office is on the second floor at 120 East Broadway.

Johnson Public Library cards

Johnson Public Library, at 274 Main Street, issues cards to people who show proof that they live in Hackensack; a driver's license or state ID works.

Deed recording and the Tax Collector

The county can take three to six months to record a deed and notify the Tax Collector of an ownership change.

Bergen County voter information

The Bergen County Superintendent of Elections/Commissioner of Registration office, at One Bergen County Plaza in Hackensack, provides voter information to county residents.

Rent Stabilization Board

The city has a Rent Stabilization Board, administered through the Department of Building, Housing, and Land Use.
