Local services and rules

Moving to Fair Lawn: who to call and what the city asks.

Fair Lawn is a borough in Bergen County, New Jersey. Rent control applies to all residential dwellings other than owner-occupied two family houses. A garage or yard sale needs no permit, but signs may not be posted in the 10 foot right of way, which includes telephone poles, bus stops, street signs and the grass area. Garbage collection takes 1 piece of furniture per collection, and a box spring or mattress counts as 1 item.

Parking rules and leaving a dumpster

Parking in a posted "No parking 8-10 am" zone requires calling the police non-emergency number, 201-796-1400, before parking. A temporary parking issue lasting less than 14 days can be handled by requesting permission through the police one-week parking link.

A permit is needed to leave a dumpster in the street.

Snow and ice on sidewalks and streets

Anyone in charge or control of a building or lot beside a sidewalk must clear ice or snow, or a path at least thirty inches wide, from the sidewalk. Throwing, placing or depositing snow or ice into or upon a street in the Borough of Fair Lawn is prohibited. Snow removal vehicles do not clear sidewalks or driveway aprons.

Borough snow removal vehicles plow each street curb to curb during each snowfall. Vehicles are asked to stay off cul-de-sacs and local municipal streets until the street has been completely cleared.

The Recycling Center at 20-05 Saddle River Road

The Recycling Center accepts only residents and businesses from Fair Lawn, NJ. Commercial, contractor and rented vehicles are prohibited from dumping yard waste or construction there.

Residents may drop off small amounts of acceptable construction materials at the Recycling Center for a fee. The Recycling Division oversees the contractor collecting the recyclables and the garbage contractor.

Rental registration and fire inspection

Single- and two-family rental properties must be registered with the Borough Clerk’s Office. A Fire Prevention inspection is required before every new occupancy of a rental property.

Water department and online bills

Water service is run by the Fair Lawn Water Department. Water bills can be received by email by completing an on-line enrollment form on the borough site. Tax and water bills can be paid online.

Schools, voter registration and the borough minibus

Students registered in the Fair Lawn School District do not need to register every year. The Fair Lawn Board of Education reserves the right to confirm residence by visiting the place of student residence listed on the registration forms.

The Municipal Clerk’s Office oversees elections and voter registration. A borough minibus service runs Monday through Friday, excluding Borough Holidays, and only within Fair Lawn.

Dog and cat licenses

Dog licenses run on a January 1 through December 31 cycle and cat licenses on a June 1 through May 31 cycle. Questions go to the Fair Lawn Health Department.

Animal control calls that are not emergencies go to the Fair Lawn Police non-emergency line, option 1 for Dispatch.
