Local services and rules

Moving to Michigan City: who to call and what the city asks.

Michigan City is a city in LaPorte County, Indiana. Not all streets inside the city limits are owned by the city; some are controlled by the state, the county or a private entity, and the Street Department does not serve those streets. Historic District regulations apply in the city's historic neighborhoods, and code enforcement acts on citizen complaints and through proactive patrolling, with complaints accepted anonymously.

Leaf collection and the burning permit

Leaf collections are made continuously within the city limits throughout the season until all leaves are removed. Burning leaves without a permit violates city ordinance and is prohibited.

Water Works at 532 Franklin Street

The Department of Water Works supplies water to residents and businesses in Michigan City. Starting or ending water service is done in person at the Water Works office at 532 Franklin Street during normal business hours. Water bills can be paid by phone through an automated service at (844) 954-0420.

The Sanitary District and its sewers

The Michigan City Sanitary District builds and maintains the sanitary sewers and storm sewers within its district, including catch basins.

Refuse Department toters and compost

The Refuse Department collects trash, garbage, yard waste and compost throughout Michigan City. All refuse goes in City-issued trash collection containers called toters. Compost is picked up at the curb on the same day as garbage pickup, and compost pickup begins the first week of May. Household hazardous waste may not be put out with the trash.

Michigan City Area Schools enrollment

Michigan City Area Schools enrolls new students. Once enrolled, a family completes an Annual Information Update that begins each May 1st for the following school year.

Michigan City Transit and the municipal airport

Michigan City Transit provides public transportation and Para-Transit services to the citizens of Michigan City. It also operates the Transit Triangle commuter route connecting Michigan City, La Porte and Purdue Northwest (PNW). The Michigan City Municipal Airport is a public-use airport located three nautical miles east of the central business district.

The online permit portal

Permit applications, business registration, short-term rentals and property changes are handled through an online permit portal.
