Local services and rules

Moving to Skokie: who to call and what the city asks.

New households in Skokie need a Village vehicle sticker within 60 days of moving in, a pet license for every cat and dog, and a rental unit registration before any unit is rented out. The Village also bills for water itself, and farm animals such as chickens or goats may not be kept in the village.

Alternate-side parking and street sweeping

Alternate-side parking starts after two inches of snow. On even-numbered days, park on the even-numbered side of the street. When it is active, it is in effect from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. every day for at least two days in a row.

Streets are swept from April through early December. No-parking signs go up at least 24 hours ahead, and vehicles not moved by 9 a.m. are ticketed.

Residential permit parking zones

Several areas of the Village require residential permit parking. Parking Enforcement at 847-933-8421 has information on permits and fees.

Skokie has five zoned sections where residents may buy a parking permit. Zones are set by house address, and the Finance Department at 847-933-8423 can say whether an address is in one.

Plowing at two, four and six inches

Streets are plowed at two inches and alleys at six. The sidewalk plow fleet is deployed when snow accumulation reaches at least four inches.

ComEd and the MC Squared aggregation program

Skokie residents get their power through ComEd, and nothing changes with service or billing under the Village's electric aggregation program. The Village has extended that program with MC Squared Energy Services through October 2027.

Village water bills and the final meter reading

The Village bills for water. Meters are read and bills are sent every three months. A final water meter reading can be requested online at least 72 hours before it is needed.

LRS trash and recycling collection

Garbage and recycling are collected on the same day for houses and small apartment buildings of up to four units. Carts must be out by 7 a.m. on collection day, and crews do not return for late set-outs. Problems, sign-up for service and free recycling toters are handled by LRS at 773-685-8811.

Yard waste is collected on Wednesdays from the first Wednesday in April through the second Wednesday in November, except on holiday weeks.

Bulk pickup, dumpsters and the SWANCC Transfer Station

Under the bulk item pickup rules, residents may put one large bulk item or up to two smaller items at the curb once a week on their regular collection day, with no appointment. Mattresses must be wrapped in plastic.

For a small move-out with a few bulky items, a pickup must be scheduled in advance with Public Works at 847-933-8427. Large cleanouts or multiple bulk items require a dumpster, available through LRS at 1-844-NEED-LRS. Residents can also bring construction debris and other landfill waste to the SWANCC Transfer Station for a fee.

The vehicle license, pet license and rental registration

All vehicles registered in Illinois to a Skokie address must buy and display a Village vehicle license, which the Village calls a wheel tax. New residents must buy and display a Village vehicle sticker within 60 days of moving in.

A pet license costs $10 for a spayed or neutered pet and $25 for one that is not.

Skokie requires all residential rental units to be registered before they are rented out. The registration form and a $25 fee per unit are due by May 1.

Residential property in Skokie is taxed at 10% of its market value.

The Skokie Swift and the library card

The CTA Yellow Line (Skokie Swift) runs between Dempster-Skokie Station and Howard Street Terminal in Chicago, with a stop at Oakton Street in Downtown Skokie, and service every 10 to 12 minutes daily. The Village describes Skokie as 12 miles from O'Hare International Airport.

Skokie residents in ZIP codes 60076, 60077 and 60203 need a photo ID or a recent utility bill showing their current Skokie address to sign up for a library card.

The Village also keeps a New Resident Information page with resources and e-newsletter sign-up.
