Local services and rules

Moving to New Brunswick: who to call and what the city asks.

Loading zone signs in New Brunswick allow only vehicles with commercial tags or a valid New Brunswick Loading Zone Pass to stop and load or unload cargo. Residential visitor permits are issued annually and run from June 1 to May 31.

The Parking Authority and its permit program

The New Brunswick Parking Authority (NBPA) runs the Residential Permit Parking Program, issues the permits and enforces the rules set by City Ordinance. All residential parking permits are digital and must be applied for online.

Temporary, tenant and homeowner permits

A new resident who needs several days to gather the documents for a permit can get a Temporary Permit valid for one week, if a permit is still available for that residence.

Tenants in a residential permit parking district are limited to two Tenant Permits per dwelling unit, issued first come, first served. A homeowner who lives in a residential permit parking district can get up to 3 Homeowner Permits, each valid for up to 3 years.

Emergency streets, snow parking and hydrants

The Parking Authority publishes a list of emergency streets where no one may park during an emergency, along with a snow parking map. Parking Services can be reached around the clock at 732-667-8100, and there is a Snow Parking Hotline at (877) 462-7669.

Parking within 10 feet of a fire hydrant is not allowed.

Enrolling children in New Brunswick Public Schools

New Brunswick Public Schools take K-12 registration through an online registration survey. A district staff member then contacts the family to confirm details and explain the next steps.

Registration requires 2 proofs of residence: a signed lease, current utility bill, tax bill, mortgage statement, or water bill.

The New Brunswick Free Public Library card

Anyone who lives, works, owns property or attends school in the City of New Brunswick can get a New Brunswick Free Public Library card without charge. The application needs two valid proofs of identification, at least one showing the current address.

Registering to vote with the county

Elections are run by the county Board of Elections and the Office of the County Clerk, and the county elections page has a Register to Vote link.
