Local services and rules
Moving to Piscataway: who to call and what the city asks.
Moving trucks, box trucks, trucks with side boards and commercial vehicles are not allowed in the Piscataway Mini-Dump; the largest vehicle allowed there is a half-ton pickup truck or a trailer no larger than 4 feet by 8 feet. Piscataway is a township in Middlesex County, New Jersey, and its property maintenance rules have homeowners clear snow and ice from the sidewalks and driveway within 24 hours after accumulation.
Moving pods, portable storage units and commercial vehicles
A moving pod can sit in a front yard or driveway but not in the right-of-way or a street, according to the Department of Community Development. It needs a zoning permit from that department, valid for 30 days. Only one portable storage unit is allowed on a property, for 30 days unless an exemption is granted.
In Piscataway, no commercial vehicles registered over three-quarter ton gross vehicle weight may be parked in a residential zone from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m.
Bulk pick-up: two appointments a year, booked through the Division of Recycling and Solid Waste
For bulky items like furniture, construction materials and large household items, Middlesex County says to start by contacting the local public works department to see if curbside bulk pickup is available.
Each Piscataway household gets two bulk pick-ups by appointment and one branch appointment per year. Pick-ups run from the first week of January through the first week of October and are not for businesses or multi-family dwellings. To book, call the Division of Recycling and Solid Waste at (732) 562-2390; a Piscataway Township Service Card is required, and appointments may be 4-6 weeks out.
Bulk pick-up takes appliances (with refrigerator and freezer doors removed), furniture and carpeting, but not tires, electronics, paint, hazardous waste, clothing or debris from home improvement contractors. Bulk debris goes to the curb no sooner than the night before the appointment and no later than 7:00 a.m. on the day, in bundles no heavier than 50 lbs, up to five cubic yards.
The Mini-Dump at 505 Sidney Rd and county hazardous waste events
The Mini-Dump (Recycling & Trash Center) at 505 Sidney Rd is open Tuesday and Thursday 2:00 to 8:00 p.m. and Saturday 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and is closed on holidays that fall on Tuesdays or Thursdays. It requires a Service Card at the DPW gate as proof of residency. It does not take contractor debris, dirt, hazardous waste, kitchen garbage, paint, rocks or stones.
Middlesex County runs household hazardous waste drop-off events that are free, for county residents only. They do not accept containers over 10 gallons.
Private haulers and single-stream recycling
Household trash in Piscataway is picked up by private haulers that residents must hire themselves. The Township lists Grand Sanitation, Republic Residential Services, RGB Disposal, Total Trash Removal and Waste Management as companies serving Piscataway, and says it does not regulate or endorse them.
Curbside recycling is run by the Middlesex County Improvement Authority and is single stream: all items go together in a 95-gallon cart. Piscataway asks residents to break down cardboard and not overstuff the recycling bin. Trash and recycling go at the curb no earlier than the night before pickup, per the property maintenance page.
Residents can call their municipal recycling coordinator or the MCIA at 1-800-488-6242 or 609-655-5141 to find their local recycling pickup schedule and setout requirements.
The Municipal Certificate of Continued Compliance and room rentals
Selling or renting a home in Piscataway requires a Municipal Certificate of Continued Compliance (MCCC) from the Township. The MCCC fee is $150 per unit for a single-family home, condo or townhome, and $125 per unit for a temporary MCCC.
Renting individual rooms in a house or running a boarding house is prohibited in Piscataway without a zoning variance and stricter fire safety rules.
Tax Collector's Office at 455 Hoes Ln
The Township sends out property tax bills, but the amount is set by several bodies including the Middlesex County Commission and the Piscataway School Board, according to its tax rates page.
The Tax Collector's Office is at 455 Hoes Ln, open Monday to Friday 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. (closed 12:20 to 1:30 p.m. for lunch); payments can be made online, by mail, in the dropbox or in person. Piscataway Township collects sewer charges, and the Tax Collector page links to paying tax and sewer payments online.
School enrollment and library cards
Piscataway Township Schools enrolls new K-12 students through an online application and its Enrollment Center at 732-572-2289 ext. 2-2573. The district does not take enrollment documents by drop-off at the Administration Building or schools; families need an appointment or must submit documents virtually.
Piscataway residents get a library card at either branch library in person, and proof of residency is required. Residents may also apply online after hours. Borrowing privileges last 3 years for people who live or own property in town.
In Middlesex County, elections are overseen by the Board of Elections and the Office of the County Clerk.
