Local services and rules

Moving to North Brunswick: who to call and what the city asks.

In North Brunswick Township, Middlesex County, the Township does not physically turn water service on or off when a property is sold or a tenant moves in or out; billing responsibility is transferred instead. The trash cart belongs to the property and must stay at the residence when the household moves. Portable storage units need zoning approval in the township.

Snow emergency streets, including Hermann Road and Route 130

Snow emergency streets include Hermann Road, Cranbury Cross Road, Nassau Street and Independence Boulevard (both sides of Route 130). Vehicles should be removed from designated No Parking/Snow Emergency Streets as soon as snow begins to fall, and vehicles parked in violation on those streets may be towed.

Residents may not push or blow snow or ice into the roadway, particularly after a street has been plowed. Residential owners must clear sidewalks in front of or alongside their property within 24 hours after a snow or ice event ends.

Water and sewer billing through the Township

The Township itself provides water and sewer service and handles the customer utility billing. When a property changes hands, the Water Services Office needs a Closing Disclosure or Settlement Statement, or page one of the recorded deed, to move billing to the new owner. A final water meter reading is required whenever a water account is transferred to a new owner or responsible party.

The Utility Billing Office is on the second floor of the Municipal Complex at 710 Hermann Road, open Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The property owner is ultimately responsible for municipal water and sewer charges, whatever a private lease says.

Trash carts, MCIA recycling and bulk pickup zones

The Township provides automated curbside trash collection to residential properties, and each residence is issued one 95-gallon automated trash cart. The Township contracts with the Middlesex County Improvement Authority (MCIA) for automated curbside recycling collection. Recycling carts go to the curb the evening before collection or by 6:00 a.m. on collection day.

Bulk materials are scheduled by request and usually collected the week of the request; pickup days depend on zone (Zone 1 Wednesday, Zone 2 Friday, Zone 3 Monday). Larger furniture such as couches and dressers can be scheduled for bulk pickup. Furniture that fits inside the automated trash cart goes out with regular household trash. Metal bed frames must be disassembled and scheduled for metal collection. Mattresses and box springs must be completely wrapped in plastic or placed in a mattress disposal bag before curbside collection.

Townhome residents get regular bulk waste collected on their second trash collection day of the week with no appointment. Township dumpster rentals are available only to single-family homes with a driveway, not condominiums or townhomes.

Rental registration, the Home Sale Certificate and the flood zone map

Landlords must register each rental property with the Township every three years under Chapter 266-10, Rental Housing. Owners must have registrations, inspections and certifications current before a new tenant occupies the property.

A Home Sale Certificate is required for residential property sales in the Township. The Tax Assessor's Office values property but does not set tax rates or collect payments. A township Flood Zone Map shows areas in designated flood hazard zones; it is informational and not a substitute for official FEMA flood maps.

Yard sale registration and animal control

Residents must register yard sales with the Township beforehand, and yard sales are limited to two per location per calendar year. The Township contracts with the City of New Brunswick for certified Animal Control services.

North Brunswick schools, library cards, RIDE shuttles and voter registration

North Brunswick Township Public Schools serve the township. New students register through the district's registration page by grade level; the district office is at 25 Linwood Place.

Middlesex County RIDE (formerly Middlesex County Area Transit) runs RIDE Routes, a community shuttle program with scheduled routes open to the public. North Brunswick library cards can be applied for online, and the card is valid at any library in its consortium.

The Middlesex County Board of Elections, 26 Kennedy Boulevard, Suite B, East Brunswick, handles voter registration; phone 732-745-3471.
