Local services and rules

Moving to Newington: who to call and what the city asks.

Newington is a town in Hartford County, Connecticut. Leaves are collected curbside on all town roads during a fall leaf collection program in November and December, separate from trash and recycling. Leaves placed in barrels, plastic bags or cardboard boxes, or mixed with branches, sticks or household trash, will not be picked up.

Winter parking ban, plowing and street sweeping

A permanent winter parking ban runs from November 1st through March 30th. During the ban, parking on streets is not allowed for more than 30 minutes between 2 a.m. and 6 a.m. A temporary ban on parking on either side of town streets can also be put in place to facilitate snow plowing operations. Vehicles that violate the winter parking ban or otherwise hinder snow removal are ticketed and towed at the owner's expense.

Snow plowing begins when accumulations are more than 1/2 inch or forecasts indicate that they will be. Clearing driveway openings is the responsibility of the property owner. Property owners or occupants are responsible for keeping sidewalks adjacent to their property clear of snow and ice.

Town streets are swept at least once a year in the spring and as needed at other times.

Trash barrels and curbside timing

Trash is collected through an automated program, and each resident is provided with a barrel. The standard container is the 95 gallon size. Barrels should be placed within 2 feet of the curb and at least 3 feet away from obstacles such as the recycling bin, mailbox or vehicles.

Containers must be at the curbside no later than 6:00 a.m. on collection day.

A recycling dumpster at the Town Landfill takes overflow from household recycling containers during normal landfill hours.

Thursday bulk pickup through Trash Away

Oversized and bulk collection for residential homes is on Thursdays of each week. Residents are allowed 2 items per week, scheduled through the town's contractor Trash Away. The deadline for scheduling an oversized or bulk pickup is Wednesday at 1:00 P.M.

Mattresses, box springs and televisions can be brought to the town's Transfer Station at 2045 Main St to be recycled.

Landfill, Transfer Station and drop-off sites

The town's Vegetation Disposal Area is at 2045 Main Street just south of Churchill Park, and it is restricted to Newington residents other than those in apartment and condominium complexes. Residents seeking to dispose of yard vegetative waste at the landfill must display a valid permit, available from the Newington Highway Department or the Town Clerk's office in Town Hall.

Residents may bring leaves to the landfill on Saturdays and Sundays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., April 1st through December 31st, with proof of residency.

Televisions, computers, monitors and printers are covered electronic devices that may be taken to the town Transfer Station instead of being put in the trash barrel.

Textile collection boxes are at the Senior Center at 120 Cedar St. and at the town Transfer Station at 2045 Main St during regular landfill operating hours.

The Police Department at 300 Garfield Street has a medication drop box in its lobby for collection and disposal of unused prescription drugs.

CTfastrak, Dial-A-Ride and Bradley International Airport

CTfastrak, the state's bus rapid transit network, has two stops in the town, at Cedar Street and Newington Junction. Bradley International Airport is about 25 minutes from the town by road.

Dial-A-Ride is a town funded transportation program for Newington residents who are seniors or who have a disability.

MDC water, library cards, tax bills, dog licenses and voter registration

The Metropolitan District (MDC) provides water supply and water pollution control to its member municipalities, and Newington is one of them.

Any Newington resident may apply for a library card at the Lucy Robbins Welles Library with a registration form and proof of residency. A Newington post office box is not accepted as proof of residency for a library card.

Property taxes are handled by the Revenue/Tax Collector, and tax bills can be searched online by bill number, list number, name or property location.

A dog previously licensed in another Connecticut town may have its registration transferred when the owner moves to Newington. Dogs must be kept on a leash and remain under the proper control of the owner.

The Town Clerk and Assistant Town Clerk can register Newington residents to vote when the Registrars of Voters are not available.
