Moving to East Hartford: who to call and what the city asks.

The Metropolitan District Commission (MDC) owns and operates East Hartford's water and sanitary sewer systems. A town ordinance requires alarm systems to be registered every year during the month of May. Plowing a street can throw snow onto sidewalks and into driveways, up to eight feet from the road.

Snow, leaves and parking tickets

Public Works Highway Services handles both snow removal and curbside leaf collection in East Hartford.

Parking tickets are issued by the Police Department.

Green carts and every-other-week recycling

Households of 1-6 family units are provided green carts for regular household trash. Curbside recycling is collected every other week.

Yard waste of twigs, leaves and grass clippings goes to the transfer station in biodegradable yard waste bags, and no permit is needed.

Bulky waste and mattress appointments

Curbside bulky waste pickup is by appointment. Single and 2-family properties get two free pickups per unit each fiscal year.

Mattresses can be picked up curbside by scheduling an appointment.

The transfer station gate

The transfer station is open to owners and tenants of 1-6 family units, and to owners and tenants of apartment complexes and condominiums of 7 and above.

Identification showing a name and an East Hartford property address must be presented at the gate. Cash is not accepted at the transfer station.

Paint recycling and textile boxes

Paint and stain products can be recycled at the transfer station without a permit. Textile recycling boxes are outside the gate at Public Works, 1 Ecology Drive, and at the transfer station.

Two library locations and the card

The East Hartford Public Library has two locations: Raymond Library at 840 Main Street and Wickham Memorial Library at 656 Burnside Avenue.

Library card numbers give access to digital resources including Job Now, Research IT, Consumer Reports and Ancestry.com.

Dog licenses and voter registration

The Town Clerk's Office issues dog licenses.

Voter registration cards are brought or mailed to the Registrars of Voters at Town Hall, 740 Main Street.
