Local services and rules

Moving to West Hartford: who to call and what the city asks.

The Town of West Hartford runs a food scraps drop-off program at town locations, and the drop-off sites are opened with the free MetroKEY app. Town ordinance sets a limit of three dogs per household. West Hartford is a town in Hartford County, Connecticut.

Sidewalk snow clearing

Abutting property owners must clear snow and ice from the public sidewalk within 12 hours after the storm or sunrise, whichever is later.

All American Waste collection and bulky pickup

The Town contracts with All American Waste, reachable at 860-289-7850, for refuse and recycling collection. Recycling is collected every other week. Curbside service is for residential properties with three or fewer dwelling units.

Property owners arrange pickup of bulky or oversized waste directly with All American Waste, including scheduling and fees.

Yard Waste and Recycling Center

The Yard Waste and Recycling Center is at 25 Brixton Street, and its telephone number is 860-561-8100. It is open Monday to Friday, 8:00 AM to 3:00 PM, and the last vehicle is accepted at 2:45 PM.

A permit is required to use the center, and permits are for residential use only. The applicant must be a West Hartford resident with a driver's license and vehicle registration showing a West Hartford address. Annual or day permits can be bought online with a credit card instead of going to the Public Works office.

Residents with an annual permit can take mattresses and box springs, e-waste, textiles, paint, cardboard and metals to the center at no additional charge. Electronics such as computers, televisions and small appliances are accepted with a permit. Leftover paint is accepted for paint recycling at the center. Textiles can be left in the Bay State Textile Bin at the center, which requires a valid residential permit.

Household hazardous waste is collected at local sites each spring and fall by the MDC.

School registration and the Residency Office

West Hartford Public Schools handle registration online. The Residency Office is in the Town Hall building at 50 South Main Street. Families can call the Residency office at 860 561-6620 to confirm which school district a street belongs to.

Registration needs a utility statement showing the service address. A household without a bill yet can ask CNG or Eversource for a Confirmation of Service.

Library card

A West Hartford Public Library card requires West Hartford residency. Cards are valid for three years and can be renewed at any customer service desk.

Tax Office and Registrar of Voters

The West Hartford Tax Office can be reached at 860-561-7474, option 4.

Voters can call the Registrar of Voters office at 860-561-7450 or email Vote@WestHartfordCT.gov with questions.
