Local services and rules
Moving to Southbury: who to call and what the city asks.
Parking in Southbury's town roads and rights-of-way is banned from November 15th to April 1st each year, and the Town may tow or ticket violators. A permit, for Southbury residents only, is required to use the Southbury Transfer Station. The whole town uses ZIP code 06488 and sits in western New Haven County, Connecticut.
Sidewalk and plowing rules under Section 15-3
Clearing snow from sidewalks next to private property is the responsibility of the abutting property owner under Section 15-3 of the Southbury Code of Ordinances. The Public Works snow policy is to begin plowing once about two inches of snow has accumulated.
Transfer Station hours and temporary permits
The Southbury Transfer Station, at 231 Kettletown Rd, is open Tuesday through Saturday, 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM, and closed Sundays, Mondays and holidays.
Residents whose vehicle is not registered in Southbury must get a temporary permit at Town Hall, showing proof of residency and the vehicle registration.
What the Transfer Station accepts
Mattresses and other bulky items such as couches are accepted at the Transfer Station, as is a 20 lb propane tank.
The Town takes leftover household paint at the Transfer Station on Kettletown Road, up to 5 cans. Food scraps go in bins next to the textile recycling area in the lower level of the Transfer Station. The Transfer Station also accepts clean, dry textiles.
Town Hall offices for taxes, dogs and voting
The Tax Collector's office, in Room 204 at Town Hall, bills and collects property and motor vehicle taxes.
Dogs must be licensed at the Town Clerk's Office once they reach 6 months old. Someone moving out of town should call the Town Clerk at (203) 262-0657 so the dog's record can be removed.
Residents can register to vote in person at the Registrar of Voters office, Room 106 at Town Hall, Monday through Thursday 8:00am to 4:30pm. Southbury has 3 voting districts, with polling sites at the Firehouse, the Public Library and the Parks & Rec/Senior Center.
Pomperaug Regional School District 15, the library and Dial-a-Ride
Southbury schools are part of Pomperaug Regional School District 15, which includes Southbury and Middlebury.
The Southbury Public Library is a town department at 100 Poverty Road, telephone (203) 262-0626.
Southbury Senior Services runs Dial-a-Ride; rides in and out of town are scheduled by calling 203-262-0652. The service is for riders age 60 or older or disabled residents of Southbury.
