Local services and rules

Moving to Danbury: who to call and what the city asks.

Garbage and recycling collection in the region that includes Danbury runs on private subscription with a hauler the resident chooses, and the hauler has to be registered to collect in the town. The Unified Neighborhood Inspection Team (UNIT) handles blight, health, housing, zoning and fire code violations, including illegal apartments, unregistered vehicles and unpermitted construction, and it also removes abandoned or unregistered vehicles from city streets.

Snow emergency parking and the Patriot Garage

Danbury uses a three-level snow emergency system. At every level, all vehicles are prohibited from parking on city streets. They must be off the street within two hours of the start of a winter storm, and vehicles left on city streets are ticketed and towed.

Alerts go out through the Danbury Alert (Everbridge) notification system, based on each resident's preferred delivery method. During a snow emergency the Patriot Parking Garage is open free of charge for the duration of the storm to residents with no other place to park.

The Parking Authority runs the Patriot Garage, the Metro North Commuter Lot and all metered and permit parking in CityCenter Danbury.

Anyone owning or occupying land fronting a sidewalk must clear snow and ice from it within four hours of daylight after the snow stops falling.

Recycling truck stops and the Mom & Pop Drop Off

The HRRA is the solid waste and recycling authority for the City of Danbury. Under its year-round recycling truck program, residents can drop off single stream recycling from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at a different location each weekday:

  • Mondays: Rogers Park
  • Tuesdays: Richter Park
  • Wednesdays: the Police Athletic League lot on Hayestown Avenue
  • Thursdays: the King Street Volunteer Fire House
  • Fridays: Mill Plain Green

The Mom & Pop Drop Off and Recycling Center is at 307 White St., open Tuesday to Saturday. A permit is required and is free to Danbury residents with proof of residency; the permit is available at the site.

The Highway Division runs a leaf pick-up program each spring and fall for 30 days. Residents set bagged leaves and properly bundled twigs at the curb.

Tax Collector office on Deer Hill Avenue

The Tax Collector office, part of the Department of Finance at 155 Deer Hill Avenue (203-797-4541), manages collection of municipal taxes and utility payments. Property tax can be paid online or at a local Union Savings Bank or Ives Bank branch. Water and sewer bills may not be paid at the local bank branches.

Central Registration for Danbury Public Schools

Danbury Public Schools enrolls new students through Central Registration, starting with an online application in PowerSchool Enrollment. The required documents are the student birth certificate (original), the parent identification (original) and two proofs of residency.

HARTransit and Danbury Municipal Airport

HARTransit runs CityBus fixed route bus service on weekdays and Saturdays in the Greater Danbury region, and it is based at 62 Federal Rd., Danbury. It also runs SweetHART, a door-to-door service for seniors or people with disabilities, and commuter shuttles to the Metro-North train.

Danbury Municipal Airport sits on about 250 acres and is overseen by the Aviation Commission.

Library cards, dog licenses and voter registration

The city has a Residents / Visitors page for newcomers with links on Danbury schools, garbage pick-up, recycling, finding an internet provider, pet adoption and a coworking space.

Library cards from the Danbury Library are free to all Danbury residents. The library asks for a photo I.D. to get a card.

The Town Clerk office issues dog licenses, and a dog license application form is posted on the Town Clerk page.

Residents can register to vote in person at the Registrar of Voters or the Town Clerk office Monday through Thursday, 7:30 am to 6 pm, or by mail to 155 Deer Hill Avenue, Danbury, CT 06810.
