Local services and rules
Moving to Staunton: who to call and what the city asks.
Staunton is an independent city in Virginia. It has five nationally registered Historic Preservation Districts: Gospel Hill, Beverley, The Wharf, Stuart Addition and Newtown. Repairs and modifications to homes, buildings, fences, walls and other site details in those five districts are reviewed and approved by the Historic Preservation Commission.
Residential parking permits and the two garages
Residential parking permits are offered to residents of portions of Berkley Place, East Beverley, Church (addresses 4-25 only), South Coalter, West Frederick, Kalorama, North Lewis, North and South Market, North New and Sycamore streets. A permit allows unrestricted on-street parking.
Permits are bought in person at the Treasurer's Office in City Hall, with proof of residency such as a valid ID showing the address. Overnight, temporary parking is available in the New Street Parking Garage and the Johnson Street Parking Garage.
The Johnson Street Garage has a clearance of 90 inches, or 7.5 feet. The New Street Parking Garage has a clearance of 7 feet.
Vehicles left overnight on city property for more than seven consecutive days are subject to towing. During winter weather, parking restrictions are sometimes placed on downtown streets for snow removal, with notices posted in the City Newsroom.
Dominion, Columbia Gas and the Public Works water and sewer office
Electricity is supplied by Dominion Virginia Power. Natural gas is supplied by Columbia Gas of Virginia.
Water and sewer run through the Public Works Department. Homeowners can establish a water and sewer account before the closing date by calling the Public Works Department or visiting its office at 1911 Craigmont Road. After closing, the deed, settlement statement or closing disclosure goes to the Public Works office to finalize the setup.
Tenants set up water and sewer service in person at the Public Works Department, 1911 Craigmont Road.
Water and sewer service is ended by contacting Public Works. The minimum charge for water service keeps being billed until service is terminated.
City-owned trash bins, bag tags and yard waste
Trash is collected in residential areas one day a week, and the collection schedule comes as a map showing each area.
Each address has a city-owned trash bin, 95-gallon by default or 45-gallon. Public Works is the contact for a different bin size or if no bin is at the home. The bin belongs to the service address, so it stays at the property for the next occupant after a move. Extra bags of trash outside the bin are collected only when they carry an official bag tag sticker.
Residents can enroll in a yard waste program that supplies a separate 95-gallon container with a beige lid, collected once a month. Leaf collection runs between November and early January, with leaves raked to the curb or street right-of-way.
Heavy trash, the recycling center and the regional landfill
Large and bulky items such as old appliances, furniture and mattresses are collected twice a year, in spring and fall. The dates are posted in the Newsroom. Heavy trash is not necessarily collected on the regular trash day.
The recycling center for Staunton residents is at the Public Works Compound, 1911 Craigmont Rd.
The regional landfill is owned by Staunton, Waynesboro and Augusta County and operated by the Augusta County Service Authority. Its residential public use site is open Monday through Saturday, 8 a.m. to 4:15 p.m., and closed Sundays.
School registration, library cards and the online map
The New Resident Info page covers utilities, school registration, pet registration, vehicle information and voting. Staunton also offers an online GIS mapping service with property owner and utility information.
Staunton City Schools handles new student registration online, starting with a pre-registration form. A Parent Portal account is needed to finish registration.
Staunton Public Library cards are available to people living in Staunton and in a set of nearby cities and counties. Registering for a card takes a picture ID showing an address. An online registration at ValleyLibraries.org can be started before visiting the Staunton Public Library with ID.
BRITE buses, the Downtown Trolley, Amtrak and the airport shuttle
BRITE Bus Service, administered by the Central Shenandoah Planning District Commission, serves Staunton. A Downtown Trolley runs in the historic downtown area, with stops including Gypsy Hill Park, the Wharf, the Staunton Visitor Center, the Amtrak station and City Hall.
Amtrak's Cardinal stops in Staunton on its way between New York, Washington, D.C. and Chicago. Virginia Breeze intercity buses stop at 210 Crossing Way in Staunton.
Shenandoah Valley Regional Airport is in Weyers Cave, Virginia, about 15 miles north of Staunton. The airport operates an on-demand shuttle service to and from locations in Staunton.
Treasurer, Commissioner of Revenue, dog licenses and the registrar
The Treasurer collects tax revenue for the city, and the Treasurer's Office is in City Hall. The Commissioner of Revenue calculates the value of personal property, business personal property and machinery and tools.
Property in the city is reassessed every two years in the odd-numbered years, with an effective date of January 1.
Dog licenses are renewed by Jan. 31 of the year the rabies vaccination certificate expires, by mail or in person at the Treasurer's office. Cats must wear a collar displaying a vaccination tag issued by a licensed veterinarian.
The city's registrar provides and approves voter registration and absentee ballot applications. The office is at 116 W Beverley St.
