Local services and rules

Moving to Ventura: who to call and what the city asks.

Old furniture and appliances cannot be set out on the curb with the trash bins in Ventura. Bulky debris left in the public right of way can be reported to Ventura's Safe & Clean Hotline at (805) 677-3900.

Parking permits, street sweeping and construction hours

Downtown residents, and residents of areas around high schools, colleges and medical facilities, may be eligible for a City parking permit that allows all-day parking where timed parking applies. Permits are applied for through the Ventura OPS online system and cost $25.00 per permit. They are mailed or can be picked up at City Hall.

Street sweeping schedules are found on the City's online street sweeping map, or by calling 805-652-4525.

Construction work in the City must be done between 7:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m. seven days a week, and the hours may be modified for some larger projects.

E.J. Harrison and Sons: trash, bulky items and mattresses

E.J. Harrison and Sons is the sole provider of solid waste and recycling collection in the City under an exclusive franchise agreement with the City of Ventura. To ask about residential trash, yard waste and recycling service, call 1-800-418-7274 or 805-647-1414.

Residential customers may arrange pickup of four bulky items during two pick-ups per year at no charge. Bulky items include large household appliances, furniture, tires, carpets and mattresses. To request a bulky item pick-up, call E.J. Harrison at 647-1414 or submit a request online.

Gold Coast Recycling & Transfer Station is the closest mattress recycling center for City of Ventura residents and recycles one mattress and boxspring set per year for free.

Household hazardous waste events and Gold Coast Recycling on Colt Street

The City holds free Household Hazardous Waste collection events on the third Saturday of each month from 9:00 A.M. to 2:00 P.M., with no event in December. Appointments are required and the events are for City of Ventura residents only. Federal transportation rules limit the amount of hazardous material that can be transported to a collection event to 15 gallons or 125 lbs. per visit.

Paints, pesticides, pool supplies and used motor oil and gasoline are typical household hazardous waste items, and it is illegal to put them in the trash.

Gold Coast Recycling at 5275 Colt Street takes antifreeze, auto and household batteries, motor oil and filters and latex paint (limit 10 gallons) from City residents for free. E-waste such as computers and televisions is accepted free from City of Ventura residents with a Ventura address at Gold Coast Recycling.

Clean Power Alliance, SoCalGas and Ventura Water

Clean Power Alliance buys the electricity, and Southern California Edison delivers it to the home, sends one bill and handles service problems.

SoCalGas is listed in the City's resource directory as the natural gas distribution utility.

Ventura Water sets up and cancels water service; new residents call its Customer Care line at (805) 667-6500.

Gold Coast Transit, the commuter bus routes and Amtrak at Seaside Park

Gold Coast Transit District runs fixed-route bus and senior/ADA paratransit service in Ventura, Oxnard, Ojai, Port Hueneme and unincorporated Ventura County, seven days a week; customer service is (805) 487-4222.

The Ventura County Transportation Commission runs six intercity commuter bus routes across the county and to Santa Barbara and Warner Center. Amtrak serves the City of Ventura at the train platform at Seaside Park on Harbor Boulevard.

Ventura Unified enrollment and Ventura County Library cards

Ventura Unified School District enrolls new students; it asks for proof of age, proof of immunizations and proof of residency. For proof of residency, the district asks for two documents showing the current residence.

A Ventura County Library card can be applied for at any Ventura County Library branch, and the card works at all locations. The initial card is free; staff ask for a valid photo ID and proof of address. A temporary card number can be had by registering online.

Floodplain management and the seven Neighborhood Community Councils

The City's Floodplain Management page directs residents to regulations, policies and documents for property likely to be subject to flooding by stormwater, and points to FEMA flood maps.

The City has seven Neighborhood Community Councils, including Westside, Downtown, Midtown, College Area, East Ventura, Pierpont and Montalvo.
