Local services and rules

Moving to Waltham: who to call and what the city asks.

Waltham, in Middlesex County about 10 miles west of Boston, vacuums each household's leaves one day per year per street, October to December, on a day separate from the usual trash and recycling day. Both municipal parking garages, the Central Square Parking Deck and the Embassy Parking Facility, allow free overnight parking. The city also runs its own electricity program alongside the utility.

Street sweeping on Moody Street, Main Street and around City Hall

The 2026 street sweeping schedule, weather permitting, is Monday and Friday from 5 am to 7 am. It covers Main St. from Newton St to Banks Sq, Moody St. along its entire length, and the streets around City Hall.

Construction hours from the Building Department

The Building Department lists construction hours as Monday through Friday 7 am to 5 pm and Saturday 8 am to 4 pm, with no work on Sundays or holidays.

The Snow Emergency / Parking Ban and the municipal lots

When a Snow Emergency / Parking Ban is in effect in Waltham there is no on-street parking, and vehicles must be removed from roadways or are subject to tow. During a ban, residents may use school and municipal lots except the Public Library lot. Vehicles must be removed from school lots within 2 hours and municipal lots within 24 hours after the ban is lifted.

Municipal parking lots cost $1 an hour or $6 for a full day.

Eversource, Waltham Community Electricity and quarterly water bills

Eversource delivers electricity, repairs power outages and maintains the grid in Waltham, and sends residents and businesses their monthly electricity bills. The city also runs Waltham Community Electricity, a municipal program with competitively selected supply options. The program is free to all Waltham residents and businesses, and there are no penalties for leaving it.

Water bills are issued quarterly. A household that does not receive a bill can contact the water department at 781-314-3810 for a copy. Bills are due 30 days from the date of the bill, and unpaid amounts accrue interest at 1% per month.

For internet, phone and TV outages, the city's contact page lists Comcast, Verizon and RCN.

Blue recycling carts and zone pick-up

Trash and recycling are collected weekly in Waltham. The city provides each household with a blue wheeled recycling cart; trash barrels are the property owner's responsibility. To get a new or an extra recycling cart, call the Recycling Department at 781-314-3390.

Pick-up is by zone, and the city's pick-up map shows each address's day. Containers may be put curbside one hour before sundown the night before pick-up, or by 7 am on pick-up day. Yard waste is collected every other week from April 6th through December 11th in the 2026 season, by Capitol Waste Services. Missed pick-ups can be reported to Public Works at 781-314-3855.

Bulk items, mattresses and Minuteman hazardous waste events

Residents may put out 1 bulk item per week next to their trash barrels. Bulk means items that will not fit in a barrel but can be collected and crushed by the trash truck, such as chairs, couches, dressers and bookcases. Some items, such as electronics and appliances, need a separate truck for pick-up, so the city suggests not leaving them until move-out day.

Mattresses are no longer allowed in the trash under state rules. Residents of buildings with six or fewer units can call the Waltham Recycling Department at 781-314-3390 to schedule a mattress or box spring pickup through the city's contracted company, Green Mattress Co. Each household may recycle up to 6 mattress or box spring units per calendar year through the city program.

Household hazardous waste goes to Minuteman events at 60 Hartwell Avenue in Lexington, one weekend date per month from April to November, at no direct charge. Residents must pre-register and bring proof of Waltham residency, a license or a Waltham bill.

The New Resident Information page, commuter rail, schools and the library card

The city's New Resident Information page covers trash and recycling, parking and transportation, schools and city services. The MBTA commuter rail has two stops in Waltham on the Fitchburg-Boston Line: Central Square Waltham (75 Carter Street) and 1 Sawyer Road, near Brandeis. MBTA bus service covers the city, including routes 61, 70, 170, 505, 553, 554, 556 and 558.

Waltham has seven public elementary schools, two public middle schools and two public high schools. The city points families to the Waltham Public Schools website and the Parent Information Center (PIC) for school alerts and information.

Waltham Public Library cards are free. The library is part of the Minuteman Library Network, and its card is valid at over 40 MLN libraries.

The fiscal year 2026 tax rate, dog licenses, the City Clerk, rental inspections and the flood map

For fiscal year 2026 the residential tax rate is $10.32 per $1000 of assessed valuation, and the commercial rate is $22.18.

A dog license in Waltham costs $6 for a spayed or neutered dog and $10 for a dog that is not. The license period is the calendar year.

The City Clerk is Chairman of the Board of Registrars of Voters and oversees elections for the City of Waltham.

The Board of Health runs a Code Enforcement Program and Rental Unit Inspections, and inspections happen routinely or after an occupant complaint.

The city's Maps Online page includes a mapping application showing FEMA flood zones.
