Local services and rules

Moving to Exeter: who to call and what the city asks.

Exeter is a town in Rockingham County, New Hampshire. Curbside trash goes out in the town blue bags, placed at the curb by 7:00 AM on the pick-up day. A winter parking ban runs each year from December 1 to March 15, with parking prohibited on town rights-of-way and streets between 12:00 a.m. and 6:00 a.m.

Municipal lots and snow emergency bans

Municipal lots have no time limits on parking. Each municipal lot has designated areas for overnight parking.

Vehicles parked in violation of the winter ban may be ticketed or towed at the owner expense. During a severe snowstorm the Public Works Director, with concurrence from the Chief of Police, may enact a snow emergency parking ban.

Curbside pickup, leaf bags and bulky item stickers

Curbside collection covers household trash, recyclables, bulky waste and seasonal leaf and grass pickup. Recycling is collected on the same day as regular trash. Curbside pickup is delayed one day after a major holiday or severe weather when it falls on a weekday.

Curbside leaf collection runs in spring and fall, up to 12 biodegradable leaf bags per residence.

Curbside bulky waste pickup takes furniture such as couches, chairs, tables, mattresses and box springs, one item per week with a bulky item sticker. Appliances, metal items, electronics and construction debris go to the Transfer Station.

Transfer Station at 9 Cross Road

The Transfer Station at 9 Cross Road is for residents and property owners of Exeter, who show a driver's license or a tax bill at entry.

A yearly Transfer Station permit is displayed on the driver's side lower corner of the car windshield.

Water, sewer and property tax billing

Water and sewer service is billed quarterly. Billing questions about consumption and other parts of a water and sewer bill are handled by the Department of Public Works.

Municipal drinking water comes from a combination of surface water and groundwater.

Property taxes for the town, county, and local and state education are collected by the tax collection department at the Town Offices, 10 Front Street.

SAU 16 and school registration

Exeter is part of SAU 16; the Exeter Region Cooperative School District oversees grades 6-12 and adult education for the member towns. Each town elects a local school board that oversees public education up through grade 5.

Main Street School and the Exeter Developmental Preschool accept new students throughout the year.

COAST buses, the Downeaster station and library cards

COAST runs an on-demand bus program with several stops around Exeter and the neighboring towns of Stratham and Newmarket.

The Downeaster station is at 60 Lincoln Street and serves all northbound and southbound trains; tickets are bought ahead of time online or by phone.

Library card applications are made in person at the library, not online.
