Local services and rules

Moving to Arvada: who to call and what the city asks.

Arvada is a home rule city located in Jefferson and Adams counties, and the City says some locations may be under county rather than City of Arvada jurisdiction; its Maps and Property Search page can be used to check an address. Streetlights in the Olde Town Arvada and Candelas subdivisions are owned and operated by the City, and the Colorado Department of Transportation, not the City, maintains and operates traffic signals on Wadsworth Boulevard, Sheridan Boulevard and Ward Road. The Arvada Fire Protection District is independent and is not run by the City; it serves the City through an intergovernmental agreement.

Dumpster permits and what counts as loading

A permit is required to place a dumpster or large container in the City of Arvada right-of-way or in a City-owned easement. A container placed in the right-of-way may be no longer than 40 yards, and the application is completed online through Arvada Permits.

For parking enforcement, the City's common parking citations page defines loading and unloading as the continuous and uninterrupted activity of placing property into or removing property from a vehicle.

Residential parking permits and the Olde Town exceptions

Residential parking permits are issued online through the Arvada Parking Permit site. A residential permit requires proof of residency: a copy or picture of a driver's license with the address on the card.

Permits are valid for one year from the date of approval. A permit holder with an approved registered vehicle can add a visitor permit, good for 24 hours, to the account.

In Olde Town, residents of the single-family homes on Yukon St. and Grant Pl. may apply for a residential parking permit with proof of residency; apartment residents in Olde Town mixed-use properties are not eligible.

Snow plowing, street sweeping and the 9 p.m. to 7 a.m. noise hours

The City plows two priority route types, arterial and collector streets. Residential streets are not routinely plowed unless they have steep hills with chronic icing problems, but they are plowed if the City Manager declares a snow emergency. The City does not remove packed snow and ice from residential streets that are passable by passenger cars.

Under the municipal code, the owner of any premises other than a one- or two-family dwelling, or the owner's agent, must remove snow, ice or slush from sidewalks and similar areas within 24 hours of the end of a snowfall or ice storm.

The City sweeps streets on a general rather than a fixed schedule. Olde Town Arvada streets are swept every two weeks between 4 and 6 am, weather permitting. Municipal code Sec. 94-6 makes it against the code to rake or blow leaves and grass into the street.

The City's noise ordinance generally does not allow excessive or unusually loud noise between 9 p.m. and 7 a.m. A noise complaint can be made at any time by calling 303-980-7300.

Water, sewer and Xcel Energy accounts

Xcel Energy provides both electricity and natural gas service in Arvada. For address changes or service transfers, Utility Billing is at 720-898-7070, Monday through Friday, 8 am to 5 pm.

A new homeowner does not open the water and sewer account personally: the title company that handled the purchase contacts the City of Arvada to set up service in the owner's name. A renter's landlord contacts the City to set up water and sewer service in the renter's name.

Arvada customers receive a bill for water, sewer and stormwater services every two months.

Republic Services trash and recycling carts

The City partners with Republic Services to offer recycling and trash services in Arvada. To request new service or change a service level, the number is 720-898-7575.

Trash and recycling charges are monthly but appear on the bi-monthly City of Arvada utility bill; there are no startup, administrative or fuel fees for residents joining the program. The program includes weekly trash collection and biweekly recycling collection with a 95 gallon cart. It provides alley service for houses that back to an alley.

Carts go out by 7 am on collection day, as close to the curb as possible without blocking the sidewalk, and are stored behind the front plane of the residence otherwise. A service day that falls on or after certain observed holidays is delayed one day; there is no delay if the holiday falls on a weekend.

A seller leaves the carts at the property; once the new owner takes possession, the new owner can change the service level by calling 720-898-7575.

Bulky items, drop-off events and hazardous waste sites

Households with cart service can order on-demand curbside bulky item pick up for an additional fee.

Citywide bulky item drop-off events are held at the North Area Athletic Complex, 19500 W 64th Parkway, which is the only location for bulky item drop-off. Residents must bring proof of residency, either a current utility bill or a driver's license with the current address. The events have a five item limit per person, and yard waste must be bagged.

For household hazardous waste and hard to recycle items, the City partners with Rooney Road Recycling Center and SustainAbility, according to its FAQ.

RTD buses and the G Line stations

The Regional Transportation District (RTD) provides Arvada with its mass transit options, including bus service and a call-n-ride service. The G Line commuter rail can be boarded at three Arvada locations: Arvada Ridge Station, Gold Strike Station and Olde Town Hub / Plaza. The G Line also connects Arvada to DIA.

Parking at the Olde Town Transit Hub is shared between RTD passengers and visitors to Olde Town.

Dog licenses, use tax, floodplain maps and historic districts

Arvada law requires dogs to be licensed annually, and cats may also be licensed. A dog license may be obtained through Foothills Animal Shelter, any Arvada Police Station or many local veterinary offices, with proof of current rabies vaccination and spay/neuter.

Arvada use tax is assessed in lieu of sales tax, and the use tax rate is the same as the sales tax rate. The City has cable franchises with TDS and Comcast; they cover broadcast TV services, not broadband. Voter registration and elections information is handled through the Jefferson County and Adams County election websites, depending on the county of residence. The City's Arvada at a Glance profile lists Jefferson County Public Schools under public schools.

The City requires both a short-term rental permit and a business license to operate a short-term rental in the City.

A property's floodplain status can be checked on the City's Interactive Floodplain Map, or by contacting the Engineering Division at 720-898-7640. The City is divided into geometric polygons used to warn and evacuate residents of threats like wildfires or floods, so only affected polygons are alerted.

The City names the Arvada Downtown Historic District (Olde Town), the Reno Park Addition Historic District and the Stocke-Walter Addition Historic District as its historic neighborhoods. The Reno Park Addition Historic District is bounded by Ralston Road to the north and Ridge Road to the south, between the alleys beside Yukon and Yarrow Street and Allison and Zephyr Street.
