Local services and rules

Moving to Commerce City: who to call and what the city asks.

Motor vehicles cannot be parked in yards or on most rock or gravel surfaces unless they are part of a defined driveway, according to the Commerce City vehicle code page. Residential streets are not plowed unless excessive snow completely blocks traffic movement, as the city snow removal page puts it. The city getting-around page notes that with so much rail activity in the city, trains are often longer than the distance between roads and can block busy intersections.

Street sweeping days and parking

On scheduled street sweeping days, residents are asked to park all vehicles off-street between 7 a.m. and 3 p.m. The city street sweeping program names neighborhoods including Derby, Victory Crossing and Irondale.

Snow, ice and the weather hotline

The municipal code requires residents and businesses to remove snow and ice from public sidewalks around their property within 24 hours of the last snow accumulation. The city weather emergency hotline, 303-227-8776, gives updates on city operations and facility closures.

Trains, truck routes and E-470

The city publishes designated routes for commercial truck traffic. E-470 is a toll road system operated by the E-470 Highway Authority, and the city lists it among the major highways for access to and from Commerce City.

Electricity and gas providers

The City of Commerce City does not manage electricity. Its utilities page lists United Power and Xcel Energy Public Service of Colorado as electric providers. The same page lists Xcel Energy Public Service of Colorado for gas and electricity, with phone 800-895-4999.

United Power asks new members for a soft credit inquiry, and service requests are made online. United Power says new service and transfers are typically handled within 24 hours but can take up to three days, and requests are not processed on weekends or holidays.

Water, sewer and internet

The City of Commerce City does not manage water or sewer. The utilities page lists South Adams County Water and Sanitation District, at 6595 E. 70th Ave., phone 303-288-2646.

The city does not manage cable or internet either. The utilities page lists CenturyLink for telephone and internet, and Comcast/Xfinity for telephone, cable television and internet.

Republic Services trash, recycling and bulk pickup

Republic Services is the citywide hauler for the residential trash and recycling program, according to the city trash and recycling page. Service is provided at no additional cost for all single-family homes and duplexes in the city; service varies for other housing types. A resident who is unsure of the service day can enter an address on the Republic Services schedule page to find the service day and recycling week.

Items that cannot fit inside the trash cart can be collected once per quarter at no extra charge, per the code enforcement page on scattered garbage and trash. The pickup must be scheduled with Republic Services at 303.286.1200.

RTD service and the airport

A number of Regional Transportation District (RTD) bus routes serve the city, connecting residents to rail service, the airport and other communities in metro Denver. From the Commerce City-72nd Avenue Station on the RTD N Line, residents can ride south to Denver Union Station in about 12 minutes or north to Eastlake-124th Station in Thornton in roughly 15 minutes. Commerce City residents and businesses have direct access to Denver International Airport.

Schools, library cards, property tax and voter registration

The City of Commerce City says on its schools page that it is served by two school districts and a charter school, Community Leadership Academy at 6880 Holly Street. Adams County School District 14 serves the historic community of Commerce City, with its office at 5291 East 60th Avenue. 27J Schools covers the northern area of Commerce City, all of Brighton and parts of Thornton. Adams 14 offers online registration for new students.

Anythink Libraries issues a free card to anyone who lives in Colorado, at any branch with a photo ID.

Commerce City is in Adams County, and property taxes are collected by Adams County. The city collects one property tax rate from everyone in Commerce City, but a bill also depends on where the property is, because schools and metro districts collect property taxes too, according to the city property tax page. The Adams County Elections website covers how to register to vote, update a voter registration, and request or track a ballot.
