Local services and rules

Moving to Aurora: who to call and what the city asks.

Residential trash and recycling is not a city service in Aurora: residents, homeowners associations or building management arrange service with a hauler licensed by the city, and every home in the city must have weekly trash service. Residents may hold only four garage sales per calendar year per address, each for 72 consecutive hours. Wood burning is prohibited on high-pollution days unless an exemption has been granted, and winter forecasts run from Nov. 1 to March 31.

Aurora is a home rule city located in Arapahoe, Adams and Douglas counties, with most of its population in Arapahoe County.

Temporary Use Permits and Neighborhood Parking Permits

Storage pods and dumpsters are not allowed on the public street. They may be placed on private property, including driveways, through the city's Temporary Use Permit program.

Any camper, trailer, boat or inoperative or abandoned vehicle parked on a public street is prohibited. The same page limits the front yard: only 40 percent of it can be a parking or driveway surface, and parking vehicles, boats, trailers and campers on the lawn or landscaped part of the yard is prohibited.

Neighborhood Parking Permit districts protect resident access from outside parking such as schools, hospitals, business centers and transit stations. Residents inside an NPP district need a permit for each vehicle to park on-street during the times posted on the street signs. Applications are online or by mail; emailed applications are not accepted.

Truck Route Map, E470 and sidewalk snow

The city publishes a Truck Route Map for choosing through-truck routes, and its transport permit applies only on highways under city jurisdiction.

E470 is an all-electronic toll road with no booths or coins. Cameras read sticker tags and license plates at highway speeds.

In snowstorms, the city plows major arterial streets first. Snow removal on smaller neighborhood streets happens only in the most extreme weather conditions, as approved by the Public Works director.

Residents and property owners must clear snow and ice from the city sidewalk next to their property within 24 hours after a snowfall ends, or 48 hours after a snow emergency is declared. Fees of $25 for single-family and $50 for other properties are charged after 24 and again after 48 hours.

Licensed haulers, container timing and drop-off sites

The licensed residential haulers listed by the city are Apex Waste Solutions, Best Cleaner Disposal, Eastern Dispose All, HBS Trash Services, Mountain High Disposal, Republic Services, Waste Connections and Waste Management.

Trash containers may not be put in the front yard or alley before 5 p.m. the day before pickup, and must be removed within 12 hours after pickup. The city also holds recycling events during the year for electronics, mattresses and more.

Mattresses can be recycled through Spring Back Colorado Mattress Recycling, 4975 Pontiac St., Commerce City, which the city lists for mattress recycling questions.

The Denver Arapahoe Disposal Site (DADS) at 3500 S. Gun Club Road takes recycling drop-off, open 6 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday. Visitors check in with the attendant, and some hard-to-recycle items carry a fee.

Household hazardous chemicals such as lawn care products, pesticides and motor oil can be collected at the door through the Waste Management At Your Door program, for a $10 fee with limited monthly appointments. Waste Management also offers a drop-off program for residents in a hurry, such as for a relocation or home sale, arranged through its hot-line at 800.449.7587.

Aurora Water and Xcel Energy accounts

Aurora Water bills water, wastewater and storm drain charges, and the property owner is the primary account holder. Aurora Water does not collect deposits on water accounts; any security or water deposit collected from a tenant is the property owner's responsibility.

A home buyer's water account is transferred to the buyer's name the next business day after closing, through the title company.

Sewer charges are based on the winter quarter average of water use, December through February, recalculated each spring and shown on the April bill.

Aurora is in Xcel Energy's service territory. Xcel Energy is the largest investor-owned utility in Colorado and offers electricity and gas services.

Relocation Resources page, Comcast and Lumen

The city has a Relocation Resources page for people considering a move to Aurora and for current residents. Questions go to Access Aurora at 303.739.7000 or access@auroragov.org.

The city's Office of Cable and Television Services helps with disputes about Comcast cable television service in Aurora, after the customer has first contacted Comcast. Comcast and Lumen Technologies are named as two of the largest internet providers, and fiber-optic service is available in some areas.

The city's voter page lists the Arapahoe, Adams and Douglas county elections offices.

Cherry Creek, Aurora Public Schools and 27J

Aurora is served by Aurora Public Schools (Adams-Arapahoe 28J) and Cherry Creek School District, plus 27J Schools for the Highpoint at DIA neighborhood and Bennett Public Schools for an undeveloped area. Residents of the Rocking Horse and Inspiration neighborhoods along Gartrell Road are part of the Douglas County School District.

Aurora Public Schools handles registering, enrolling and checking in students at the start of each school year.

RTD buses, the R Line and the A Line

RTD provides bus services throughout Aurora. RTD's R Line light rail connects to the A Line. Denver International Airport is reached from Aurora by transferring from the R Line to the A Line at Peoria station.

Library cards, pet licenses and the Occupational Privilege Tax

Aurora Public Library cards and use of the library are free. A new cardholder can pick up a card at a branch with a photo ID, and brings proof of address if the ID address differs from the current address.

Cats and dogs over 6 months old must have current rabies vaccines and an Aurora Animal Shelter license, and the license tag and rabies tag must always be worn. A 1-year license is $15 for spayed or neutered animals and $53 otherwise.

Aurora charges an Occupational Privilege Tax of $2 per month on employees, and $2 per month for employers, where gross earnings are $250 or more per calendar month.

The city says every home or property is at some level of risk for flooding, and residents can email waterfloodplain@auroragov.org to determine their flood risk.
