Local services and rules

Moving to Boonton: who to call and what the city asks.

Boonton is a town in Morris County, New Jersey. The Boonton Station, at Main St. & Rt. 202, is on the Montclair-Boonton Line. The town library is the Boonton Holmes Public Library, in a historic building willed to the people of Boonton by James Holmes. New residents must license their dogs and cats within 10 days of residing in town, and a rabies vaccination is required.

Main Street's 2-hour limit and the downtown permit

Main Street between Division and Hill Streets has a 2-hour parking limit Monday to Saturday, 8AM to 6PM, and moving a car to avoid the limit is illegal.

The Town offers a parking permit for the historic downtown business district, and the application goes to the Town Clerk.

Snow parking, sidewalk clearing and leaf collection

On-street parking is prohibited from 10:00pm to 6:00am when streets are covered with at least three inches of snow. Parking is prohibited beyond 24 hours after a street has been plowed of snow, and the Police Department may have vehicles removed after that. During snow storms, residents with only on-street parking may use municipal lots including the Town Hall lot and the Kiwanis lot.

The owner or caretaker of a property with a sidewalk must clear a three foot wide path along the whole sidewalk within 12 hours of daylight after snow stops.

The Division of Streets collects leaves from the last week of October until mid-December, depending on weather and leaf fall.

Garbage, recycling and Christmas tree pickup

The Town uses an outside contractor for curbside garbage collection. Garbage goes to the curb after 6 PM on the evening before pickup; garbage put out earlier or on no-collection days brings a warning and possible summons. A typical single-family household may put out up to two garbage cans per collection day, and a filled can may not exceed 30 pounds.

Recyclables go to the curb on the evening before collection, no later than 6:00AM on collection day. Recycling containers must have handles and may not weigh more than 50 pounds when full.

Christmas trees are picked up on the regular trash day throughout January.

Bulk stickers and the Recycling Center at 1 Plane Street

Items that do not fit in a garbage can, such as mattresses, box springs, furniture, appliances and carpeting, need a sticker bought from Town Hall or the Public Works Department. Large appliance pickups are scheduled by calling 973-402-9460 and are made on Wednesdays only.

The Recycling Center, at the Town Garage at 1 Plane Street, is for town residents only and is staffed by Public Works employees. Yard waste including leaves and grass clippings can be brought to the Recycling Center during its normal hours of operation.

JCP&L and the Finance Office at 100 Washington Street

JCP&L is the electric company to contact about power outages and streetlight outages.

Water and sewer billing is done by the Finance Office at 100 Washington Street in Boonton. Residents who are moving and need a final meter reading can request one by calling 973-402-9410 x623.

School registration, polling sites and rental registration

Boonton Public Schools takes student registration online through a portal, or in person at the Board of Education, 434 Lathrop Avenue, by appointment. High school students living in Lincoln Park must register with the Lincoln Park Board of Education before registering at Boonton High School.

Where a resident votes depends on the ward: Wards 1 and 2 at the South Boonton Fire House, Wards 3 and 4 at the Senior Center.

Properties must be registered and inspected on a change of ownership or tenancy, and a Certificate of Compliance is issued for every unit sold or rented. Each housing unit must be registered annually, and a unit may not be rented unless it is registered and licensed.
