The typical Detroit home sits near $76,800 and the typical Atlanta home near $420,600, more than five times the price. If you own in Detroit, do not assume the sale will buy a similar house in Atlanta. Renting first lets you learn the neighborhoods before you buy, and a conversation with a Georgia lender before you list your Detroit place shows what the sale actually funds.
The federal price index for 2024 (U.S. = 100) puts the Detroit area and the Atlanta area level, at 100 for both. Groceries and utilities should feel familiar. Housing is where the two cities part ways.
Incomes, and the city tax you leave behind
Median household income runs about $39,575 in Detroit and $81,938 in Atlanta. That gap matters only if your paycheck moves with you. A transfer or a remote job keeps your Detroit income while you pay Atlanta prices, and a new local job may land closer to the Atlanta figure. Settle your income before you sign anything long, because the housing numbers below assume the higher paycheck.
Taxes shift too. A Detroit city resident pays a combined 6.65% income tax, state and city together. Atlanta residents pay Georgia's state rate of a little over 5% with no city income tax on top, so Atlanta's headline rate looks higher while the combined figure is lower. Run it with your own income before judging either way.
Rent: $1,034 becomes $1,617
Median rent is $1,034 a month in Detroit and $1,617 in Atlanta, which is 56% more, or roughly $583 every month. Two things follow for the move.
- Get a lease signed with a firm move-in date before you book a truck, not after. A mover can hold your date; a landlord can lose your unit.
- Look hard at what you own. A sofa that fit a Detroit living room may not fit the smaller, pricier unit you can afford in Atlanta. Every item you sell in Michigan is one less thing to pay to carry south.
Both ends have renters: about 50% of Detroit households rent, and 54% of Atlanta households do. If you rent in Detroit, check your lease end date and notice period early. Overlapping rent on two places is the quiet cost of this move, and a lease that ends the day before your Atlanta keys arrive leaves you in a gap with a loaded truck. From a Detroit driveway to an Atlanta elevator slot

In Atlanta, 20% of residents changed addresses within the last twelve months, against 11% in Detroit, so ask about move-in rules and elevator slots early, then book your date weeks ahead. Booking early gives you the date you want and a chance to compare quotes.
Commuting is where Atlanta daily life is decided. I-285, the Perimeter, and I-85 are known for rush-hour gridlock, so where you live relative to where you work shapes your days more than the city total does. Check a weekday commute from each neighborhood before you sign a lease.
Lake-effect snow behind you, heat and a rare ice storm ahead
Detroit winters are cold and snowy, with lake-effect snow that can arrive off-season, so a winter departure needs a contingency day. Atlanta summers are hot and humid, with temperatures in the 90s and above, which is hard on a crew carrying furniture up from a parking lot and on anything heat-sensitive in the truck. Atlanta winters are mild, but one to three ice storms a year can shut down highways, so a January or February delivery is not risk-free either.
Spring, April and May, and fall, September and October, avoid the worst of both ends. If you have to move from June through September, ask for a morning loading and delivery time. If you have to move in winter, leave slack in the schedule at both ends.
The federal rules for crossing from Michigan into Georgia
Because your belongings cross a state line, federal moving rules apply from the Detroit loading to the Atlanta unloading. Here they are in the order you meet them.
- The survey. Your estimate should rest on a physical survey of your belongings, in person or by video, unless you waive it in writing. A quote given by phone sight unseen is a red flag.
- The estimate type. Every estimate must say whether it is binding or non-binding. Under a binding estimate you pay that amount at delivery in Atlanta, plus any services you added after signing, plus up to 15% for impracticable operations collected at delivery, with anything above that billed later. Under a non-binding estimate the final bill follows actual weight; the mover must release your goods once you pay 110% of the estimate, and the rest is billed 30 days after delivery. A not-to-exceed price is a common form of binding estimate worth asking for.
- The valuation. Full Value Protection applies automatically, so the mover must repair, replace or pay the replacement value of what it damages. Released Value, at 60 cents per pound per article, applies only if you sign a written waiver choosing it. Either one is the mover's liability level, not insurance.
- The bill of lading. You must receive it at least 3 days before loading and can cancel within 3 days. Never sign it blank.
- Delivery. No law sets a number of days. The window written on the bill of lading governs, and the mover owes you 24 hours' notice and prompt word of any delay.
- Claims. File in writing within 9 months of delivery. The mover must acknowledge within 30 days and pay, decline or make an offer within 120 days. A note on the delivery receipt is not a claim.
A large cash deposit is another red flag, though no federal cap exists.
Hiring for the Detroit-to-Atlanta haul
Because this move crosses state lines, the company must be licensed to move households between states. On FMCSA's search, "Motor Carrier of Household Goods" means the company moves you, while "Broker of Household Goods" means it hands your job to another company. Before booking, check that the carrier holds a valid USDOT number there.
