Local services and rules

Moving to Grand Prairie: who to call and what the city asks.

Grand Prairie lies in Dallas, Tarrant, Ellis and Johnson counties.

Street parking and noise limits

Vehicles may not stand or park unattended for a continuous 48 hours on a public street in Grand Prairie, according to the City's residential parking rules. The same page bans parking of oversized vehicles, defined as over 1.5 tons, 8 feet wide and more than 16 feet long, in residential neighborhoods. Vehicles cannot be parked in the front, side or rear yard unless on asphalt or concrete, and may not block the sidewalk.

The noise ordinance sets average residential sound limits of 65 decibels from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. and 58 decibels from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m.

Water service and the security deposit

Water service is opened through an online application to the City's Water Service. Security deposits are required on most water accounts and must be paid before water service is activated. Service starts two business days after the deposit is paid, and service orders are worked Monday through Friday.

The water bill also carries a fixed trash and recycling charge: garbage collection twice a week and recycling collection once a week.

Green bins, brush and bulky pickup

Curbside recycling is collected once a week on Wednesdays, in the City's green bin. Any resident who pays for water service, which also includes Solid Waste service, can get one free green bin at the Grand Prairie Landfill at 1102 MacArthur Blvd.

Brush pickup is once per month by zone, with no appointments and no out-of-cycle pickups. The brush pile can be no larger than a VW Beetle. Bundled brush must weigh less than 50 pounds and be no more than 6 feet long. Brush put out more than one week before the zone's scheduled service can bring a fine.

Grand Prairie offers a free weekly curbside pickup of bulky items, scheduled by calling Republic Services. Bulky items are old appliances and furniture such as washers, refrigerators, sofas and chairs. Carpet, fencing and building materials are not included and can go to the Grand Prairie Landfill.

The My Neighborhood page lets a resident enter an address to find nearby parks, council district, garbage and recycling days and brush pickup days.

Household hazardous waste and the Landfill

Residents can bring household hazardous waste to a collection event in Grand Prairie, or to the Environmental Collection Center in Fort Worth with a free voucher from the Public Health and Environmental Quality Department. Each household can use the City's service once per year, and registration is required for events.

The Grand Prairie Landfill accepts household and commercial solid waste generated in Grand Prairie, Monday through Saturday during normal operating hours.

GPISD, library cards and voter registration

GPISD serves the Dallas County portion of Grand Prairie. Library cards are free at all Grand Prairie library locations. Customers 18 and older bring a valid government-issued ID; younger customers bring a parent to fill out the application.

On the City's elections page, the links go to Dallas County, Tarrant County and Ellis County voter registration, and voters who have moved must update their voter information.

Via Grand Prairie, the park and ride and the airport

Via Grand Prairie is the City's on-demand, shared transportation service, booked in the Via Grand Prairie app or by phone at 214-253-0874.

The park and ride on eastbound Interstate 30, just east of Belt Line Road, offers free parking spaces for commuters who carpool and leave their cars for the day.

Grand Prairie Municipal Airport is a designated Reliever Airport that handles small piston planes, business turboprop aircraft and helicopters. It lies three miles southwest of downtown.

Rabies vaccination, flood zones and short-term rentals

All cats and dogs four months or older must have a current rabies vaccination, which only a veterinarian can provide.

The Floodplain Division can determine the flood zone and flood risk for a property, and the City participates in the Community Rating System, which discounts flood insurance premiums.

For short-term rentals, Grand Prairie requires a permit, a hotel occupancy tax payment and a parking site plan. Operators must give occupants a brochure with a 24/7 contact person and emergency numbers.
