Local services and rules

Moving to Irving: who to call and what the city asks.

Irving collects residential trash twice each week. City water service can be turned on with no one at the property, as long as all faucets there are turned off.

Trash day and blue recycling bags

The city's Solid Waste Services collects recycling and brush/bulky items one time a week, and an interactive map on the city's waste collection page shows each address's pick-up day. Trash goes at the curb by 7 a.m. on collection day or after 6 p.m. the night before. The limit is eight trash bags per collection day.

Recycling goes in translucent blue bags. They are available for purchase at City Hall and Irving Recreation Centers.

Bulky item pickup and what the curb will not take

Bulky items are collected on the same day as regular trash pickup and curbside recycling, according to the city's bulky waste page. A maximum of four bulky items is allowed each week. The city defines a bulky item as an easily moveable household item such as a sofa, chair, table, lamp or mattress.

Curbside collection does not take construction or demolition debris or fences. Those can go in a rented roll-off container or to the Hunter Ferrell Landfill for a charge.

Hunter Ferrell Landfill drop-off

The recycling drop-off station at the Irving Hunter Ferrell Landfill, 110 E. Hunter Ferrell Road, is open 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday, except city-designated holidays.

Residents can use the landfill's free daily drop off for household trash under 150 pounds, unlimited recycling, clean brush and clean dirt. Construction and demolition debris is charged the standard landfill fee. Up to five passenger tires per calendar year can be brought to the landfill for free; tires are not collected at the curb.

City water service at City Hall or MyIrvingBill.org

New residential customers apply for city water service in person at City Hall, 825 W. Irving Blvd., or online at MyIrvingBill.org. The required documents are a deed or rental/lease agreement and a driver's license or other valid identification.

Service fees depend on the activation date chosen: $30 for same day, $20 for next day to two days out, $15 for three days or more, and $50 after hours. Same-day service needs the application, deposits and fees paid by 2:30 p.m. If the meter is running when the technician arrives, the water is shut off to protect against leaks.

Oncor, Atmos Energy and the internet providers

The city's utilities page sends residents to the Power to Choose website for a list of retail electric providers, and lists Oncor at (888) 313-6862 for reporting outages and downed power lines. Under Natural Gas it lists Atmos Energy at (800) 460-3030.

For television and internet service, the same page lists AT&T, DirecTV, DISH Network, Frontier Communications, HughesNet, Spectrum and Viasat Satellite Internet, and says providers may have limited service areas within the city.

Irving ISD registration, library cards and voter forms

New Irving ISD students register online and upload the parent or guardian's ID, the child's proof of age, immunization records, previous report cards if applicable, and proof of residence. The district has a school locator that shows assigned schools by address.

Irving Public Library has three locations. New cardholders register at any of them and bring photo identification with their current address; online preregistration gives a number that must be followed up in person within 30 days.

Adult U.S. citizens can pick up a Texas Voter Registration Application at any of Irving's three library branches. The voter registration page points to the Dallas County Elections Department for election dates and results.

Irving Connector, The Loop and the two airports

Irving Connector, provided by Via Transportation, serves residents affected by DART's discontinuation of bus routes 225 and 255. It also runs The Loop at Las Colinas, a free circulator in the Urban Center.

The city's utilities page lists Dallas / Fort Worth International Airport at 3200 E. Airfield Drive, DFW Airport, and Dallas Love Field Airport at 8008 Cedar Springs Road, Dallas.

Homestead exemption, pet tags, rentals and neighborhoods

Irving is in Dallas County, Texas. The Dallas Central Appraisal District handles the residence homestead exemption. To qualify, the owner must own and live in the home on January 1 of the year the application is made.

Pet ID tags are $3 to $5 and microchipping is $15 at the Irving Animal Care Campus.

Short-term rentals, meaning lodging for less than 30 consecutive days, must be registered annually with the City of Irving. Owners and managers of multifamily complexes must keep units and exterior areas within city code standards. Code Enforcement can be reached at (972) 721-4829.

The city's Neighborhood Services supports Irving neighborhood associations and provides a neighborhood map and information on starting or registering an association. The Heritage District is a named city neighborhood district in the city's Neighborhood Planning Initiative. The city's Welcome to Irving page for new residents links to setting up utilities, frequently called numbers, housing and neighborhoods, public transportation, and permitting and inspections. City Hall is at 825 W. Irving Blvd.
