Local services and rules

Moving to Independence: who to call and what the city asks.

Independence streets are a mix of state, county and city roads, and each government maintains its own; the county publishes a road map showing who maintains each road, and problems go to the matching agency, according to the city's FAQ. The same page places the regional Kentucky driver licensing office at 1655 Delaware Crossing in Independence, behind the Independence Kroger.

Trucks over one ton and the 72-hour street limits

Trucks of over one ton in capacity may not be parked on a residential street anywhere in the city. The code defines a residential street as one where a majority of the buildings are used for residential purposes.

Two other limits run on a 72-hour clock. A vehicle may not be left parked in one place on a public street for 72 hours or longer; after that it is treated as abandoned. A parked trailer may not stay on a street or other public way for more than 72 continuous hours.

The city can also designate street cleaning areas with signs and markings, and it is unlawful to stop on a designated street on the posted day.

Noise hours and loading

Under the noise ordinance, sound that is plainly audible 50 feet away is prima facie evidence of a violation between 10:00 p.m. and 7:00 a.m. Sunday through Thursday, and between 11:00 p.m. and 7:00 a.m. on Friday and Saturday.

The ordinance also lists unreasonably loud, harsh or excessive noise from loading or unloading a vehicle, or from operating it, as a violation.

Duke Energy, Owen Electric and the city's new-resident FAQ

Independence is served by both Duke Energy and Owen Electric. The city's FAQ links a map to find which one serves your street, and sends new residents to each company's website to start service.

For utilities and trash, the same FAQ also names Sanitation District No. 1 (SD1), the NKY Water District (NKWD) and Rumpke.

Sewer through the water district, trash through a vendor

Sewer service is started or cancelled through your water district, because SD1 bills from water district records. The page lists the Northern Kentucky Water District at 859-578-9898.

Residents are billed directly each month by the third-party vendor that holds the city's trash and recycling contract, and pay within thirty days of receipt.

Trash set out for pickup may be placed no sooner than 4:00 p.m. the day before the regular pickup and must be removed by midnight on pickup day. Containers must have a secured lid.

Bavarian Landfill vouchers and Big Blue Bin drop-offs

Kenton County residents can get a voucher to take bulky waste to Bavarian Landfill. The limit is 1 voucher per residential address per month, and no more than 10 per year. Mattresses are accepted under the program with an additional $5 disposal fee that the voucher does not cover. A paid trash bill is required to apply.

Kenton County Public Works manages Big Blue Bin recycling drop-offs. Locations in Independence include Public Works at 420 Independence Station Road, the Kenton County Public Library Independence Branch at 1992 Walton Nicholson Rd, and the Historic Kenton County Courthouse at 5272 Madison Pike. Richardson Road Park at 3975 Richardson Road takes cardboard only.

Kenton County School District enrollment

The Kenton County School District serves Independence. To enroll, find your school with the district's street finder, then set up an appointment by calling that school. The district also offers online registration.

Enrollment requires proof of residency, which may include utility bills or a rental, lease or purchase contract.

Property tax, occupational license fees and pet licenses

Property tax can be paid online (3.5% card fee), at any Northern Kentucky Heritage Bank location, or at the city building at 5409 Madison Pike. Checks can be mailed to The City of Independence, P.O. Box 830.

Kenton County Business Services administers the occupational license fees imposed for doing business, practicing a profession, working or renting within Kenton County and its cities.

All dogs and cats in Kenton County must be licensed each year, with proof of current rabies vaccination. A license for a dog or cat that is not neutered is $20; neutered or microchipped is $10.

TANK buses, CVG, library cards and voter registration

The Transit Authority of Northern Kentucky (TANK) provides transit services to Boone, Campbell and Kenton counties and downtown Cincinnati. The Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport (CVG) is the airport serving the region, and it has carried commercial passengers since 1947.

Kenton County Public Library cards are for Kenton County residents who are first-time cardholders. Anyone under 18 must sign up in person at a branch.

Voters in Independence register with the Kenton County Clerk. Registration books close 28 days before each election.
