To start or stop Charlotte Water service, call 311 or 704-336-7600 and ask for "water move in or move out" between 7:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. Charlotte Water aims to have the water turned on within 24 to 48 hours, and a charge applies for new services. Mecklenburg County does not collect curbside materials; collection at home is the responsibility of the municipality where the resident lives.
Waste Pro Collection and Bulk Pickup
Waste Pro handles residential collection in Matthews: solid waste once a week, bi-weekly single stream recycling in a 96-gallon cart, and weekly curbside yard waste removal. Bulk waste collection is scheduled and paid for in advance by calling Waste Pro at 980-325-3640.
County Drop-Off Centers
Mecklenburg County residents may use the county's full service recycling centers. County residents can take recyclables, yard waste, bulky waste, electronic waste and household hazardous waste to any of the four full-service drop-off centers: Compost Central, Foxhole, Hickory Grove and North Mecklenburg. They are open Monday through Saturday from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m., and restrictions apply. Staffed recycling centers in the county accept only recyclables: no trash and no household hazardous waste.
Matthews animal license and county tax relief
All dogs, cats and ferrets four months of age or older inside the city limits of Matthews must be vaccinated for rabies and have a current Town of Matthews Animal License. A one-year license costs $10 for spayed or neutered animals and $30 for fertile animals, and proof of a current rabies vaccination is required.
Mecklenburg County lists property tax exclusions for qualifying elderly and disabled residents under its tax relief programs, and a deferral (Circuit Breaker) for qualifying people on their permanent residence.
Online Registration and Matthews Library
New students in Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools are enrolled through the Online Registration process in Infinite Campus. Proof of residency and immunization records meeting North Carolina requirements are among the documents asked for.
