Local services and rules
Moving to Ontario: who to call and what the city asks.
Ontario runs a citywide residential street sweeping program with designated parking restrictions, and each side of a street has a different sweeping day. Yard sales are permitted only one weekend of each quarter, and no yard sale permit is required. All rental housing units over seven years old in the City of Ontario are inspected once every four years.
Oversize vehicle permits and street sweeping signs
A permit is required and must be displayed to park an oversize vehicle on a public street. An oversize vehicle means one over 20 feet long, 80 inches wide, 78 inches high or 6,000 pounds. Permits are limited to 48 hours, and the application should be submitted at least five business days ahead.
Street sweeping parking enforcement follows the day and time posted on the street signs, even if the sweeper has already passed. Street sweeping is not scheduled on trash day, because trash carts on the curb keep the sweeper from cleaning the curbs.
Loud work hours and yard sale hours
Under the city code, loud construction, remodeling, digging, grading and demolition work is allowed on weekdays between 7:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m., and on Saturday or Sunday between 9:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m.
Yard sale activities may only take place between 7:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m.
Utilities Customer Service at 1333 S. Bon View Avenue
The Ontario Municipal Utilities Company (OMUC) provides the City's domestic water supply and wastewater collection services.
Utilities Customer Service sets up new water, sewer and Integrated Waste services and handles the billing and payment collection. Starting service takes a government-issued ID and an advance payment, and an owner who buys a home must show proof of ownership if it was purchased within 60 days. Service can be started in person at the Utilities Customer Service Center at 1333 S. Bon View Avenue, or by calling (909) 395-2050.
The Integrated Waste Department and the green-lid container
The City of Ontario Integrated Waste Department is the exclusive hauler for all residential and commercial customers.
The City provides residential refuse collection, with curbside trash and recycling collected once a week. Food scraps go in the green-lid container rather than the black-lid trash container, and trash, recycling and green containers are serviced the same day.
Residents look up their collection schedule on the City's residential waste collection map.
Bulky Item appointments and the Household Hazardous Waste facility
Residents schedule a curbside Bulky Item collection appointment by calling (909) 395-2050. Single-family residents may schedule up to four appointments per calendar year, and each appointment is limited to five large items. Apartment and condo residents contact their property or association manager to schedule bulky item appointments.
Ontario's Household Hazardous Waste facility is at 1430 S. Cucamonga Avenue and is open Fridays and Saturdays from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. There is no charge for the program, which is for residents only. The facility accepts motor oil, auto fluids, paints and paint thinners, household cleaners, pesticides and fertilizers. A free reuse center lets residents pick up partially used products dropped off by other residents.
School districts and the Ontario City Library card
The City's education page lists high schools in the City of Ontario: Chaffey High School, Ontario High School and Colony High School. The Mountain View School District is located in the Ontario Ranch area. The page also lists the Ontario-Montclair, Chino Valley Unified and Cucamonga school districts. OMSD offers online student enrollment for new and continuing students.
An Ontario City Library card can be used at both of the library's locations. Adults signing up for a card for themselves or a minor provide a valid government-issued photo ID and proof of mailing address, which can be the address on the ID, and complete a Library Card Application. Adults without proof of a mailing address can sign up for an Easy Access Library Card, valid for three months, which allows computer use, online resources and checking out up to three books.
Omnitrans, ONT Connect and the Community Resources page
Omnitrans is the public transit agency serving the San Bernardino Valley, and it operates local and express bus routes, sbX bus rapid transit service, and Access, a paratransit service for the disabled. ONT Connect runs non-stop between the Rancho Cucamonga Metrolink station and Ontario International Airport.
The City's Community Resources page is meant to help new residents get acquainted with the City and its services, with contacts for animal licensing, cable and internet, trash, water and more.
County Assessor, Registrar of Voters, short-term rental permits and sandbags
When ownership of a property changes, the San Bernardino County Assessor receives a copy of the recorded deed and determines whether a new appraisal is required. The owner is then notified of the new assessment and may appeal the value. The Registrar of Voters at 777 East Rialto Avenue, San Bernardino, handles voter registration, and its My Elections Gateway shows registration status.
A Short-Term Rental Permit is required when a resident requests to establish a short-term rental, meaning a rental of not more than 30 consecutive days.
During heavy rains and flooding, sandbags are free to Ontario residents only. Unfilled sandbags (limit fifteen) are available at any Ontario Fire Station, and sand is available at De Anza, John Galvin, Anthony Munoz and Whispering Lakes parks.
