Local services and rules

Moving to Providence: who to call and what the city asks.

Many Providence sidewalks are hollow with vaults below them, and some can collapse under the weight of a car. City ordinance also prohibits parking within 25 feet of any intersection even without a posted sign. Providence is the county seat of Providence County.

The Traffic Permit and the Dumpster/Pod Permit

To reserve a specific parking space for a moving van, apply for a Traffic Permit through Traffic Engineering and select the Emergency No Parking Tow Zone posting. Temporary paper signs are posted.

A moving pod kept on the street needs a Dumpster/Pod Permit, applied for through the city's online permitting portal.

Overnight parking permits and guest passes

An overnight parking permit is required to park on-street in Providence from 2:00AM to 5:00AM. Each housing unit may buy two on-street overnight permits per year, renewed annually, and the permit does not guarantee a specific space.

Residents bring a valid, original car registration to get an overnight permit. Guest passes can be used up to five times a month and are for resident permit holders only.

Street sweeping, the snow parking ban and sidewalk clearing

Street sweeping runs 10:30 PM to 7:00 AM, Sunday night through Friday morning.

During a snow parking ban, parking is prohibited 24 hours a day, not just overnight. Homeowners and business owners must clear sidewalks of snow within 8 hours after it stops snowing.

Recycling, bulky items and drop-off sites

The City provides weekly curbside recycling collection to residents in structures with 6 or fewer dwelling units. Buildings with more than 6 living units are not eligible for municipal trash or recycling service; those residents contact their property owner or manager.

Carts go to the curb the night before collection or by 5:30 a.m. on collection day. If a cart was out and missed, call Waste Management at (800) 972-4545 for next-day collection.

Residents of buildings with 6 or fewer units schedule a bulky item pickup with Waste Management at 1-800-972-4545 at least 24 hours before their regular collection day, or through the online form. Up to 3 items per unit can be scheduled for service. Items go at the curb between 4 P.M. the evening before collection and 4 A.M. on collection day, not blocking the sidewalk.

The Department of Public Works at 700 Allens Avenue takes Providence residents' unbagged mattresses and box springs on Saturdays, 7am to 12:45pm. Household hazardous waste such as propane tanks, gasoline and pesticides goes to the Eco-Depot, by appointment, for RI residents.

Providence Community Electricity and Providence Water

The City of Providence runs the Providence Community Electricity supply program.

Providence Water serves direct retail customers in Providence, North Providence, Cranston, Johnston, and Smithfield. It requires final water readings for property closings to be requested on its online form, five days before the closing date.

School registration, library cards, dog licenses and the airport

Registration at Providence schools requires proof of a Providence address: a utility bill (not a cell phone or internet bill), pay stub, lease or bank statement dated within 60 days of registration.

For a library card, Rhode Island residents present a current photo ID with current address plus another proof of current address at the Community Libraries of Providence.

Dogs over four months old must be vaccinated against rabies and licensed through the city.

Rhode Island T. F. Green International Airport is at 2000 Post Rd, Warwick, RI 02886, run by the Rhode Island Airport Corporation.
