Moving to Riverhead: who to call and what the city asks.

Riverhead is a town in Suffolk County, on the North Shore and North Fork of Long Island. A yard sale, garage sale or tag sale in the town needs a permit. Residential fences in the front yard or along any side or rear street line may be no more than 4 feet in height. Parking at town beaches is enforced year-round by the town police. Claims for repair or replacement of mailboxes damaged by plowed snow can be submitted to the Highway Department.

Parking is not allowed in town cul-de-sacs. Snow from a driveway is not to be shoveled or plowed into the street.

Curbside collection and the bulk day

Household trash, recycling, yard waste and bulk waste are collected curbside by a private collector under contract to the town, within the Riverhead Refuse and Garbage District. Pickup days for household trash and for bulk or yard waste vary by sub-district.

Recycling is collected every Wednesday and alternates weekly between co-mingled and paper or cardboard. Plastic bags of any kind are not accepted in recycling.

The town does not provide collection service to condominiums, apartments, mobile homes, commercial businesses and other institutions. Recycling calendars and yard waste permits are obtained at Town Hall in the Office of the Receiver of Taxes, 4 West Second Street.

Up to six bulk items are collected on the bulk day: appliances, scrap metal, furniture, mattresses, air conditioners and rugs. More than six is a violation of the Town Code.

Bulk items must be in safe condition, with fluids drained, and placed curbside for pickup. Rugs or carpeting removed by the resident are collected on the last scheduled pickup day of the week, which is the bulk day, and must be rolled, bundled and tied securely.

Drop-off sites for yard debris, electronics, medications and clothing

Residents may buy a permit to bring yard debris such as branches, leaves and grass clippings to the Yard Waste Facility on Young's Avenue. The site is for residents only, with no contractors or landscapers. Electronic waste is accepted at the same facility during normal operating hours.

Medications, both over-the-counter and prescription, may be dropped off at the Police Department at 201 Howell Avenue. The town also has a food scrap drop-off site.

A clothing and textile collection bin is at the town Transfer Station.

Riverhead Water District and Riverhead Sewer District

The Riverhead Water District supplies drinking water in the town. Requests to connect a new build, a rebuilt house or a home currently on a well to the district are made in writing with a site plan or survey; after a site visit, a contract for water supply is sent by email.

The Riverhead Sewer District covers mainly the hub area and business district of Riverhead. Homeowners wishing to connect to it complete a connection application and use an authorized, bonded drain layer.

Town Hall: property taxes, valuation and rental permits

The Receiver of Taxes at Town Hall collects property taxes levied by the town, the county and school districts. The Assessor sets the valuation of all property in the township.

A rental permit is applied for or renewed online through Code Enforcement, and applicants need a valid email address or a mobile phone with text capability.
