Local services and rules

Moving to Patchogue: who to call and what the city asks.

Patchogue is a village in the Town of Brookhaven, Suffolk County, on the South Shore of Long Island. Village borders are Blue Point on the west, Roe Boulevard on the north, Bay Avenue on the east and the Great South Bay on the south. It holds its own village elections every two years, in even years. A Safe Homes Program lets village public safety officers check a home during vacations or other absences, with the form emailed to the Village Clerk. Patchogue Bay, Great South Bay and the South Shore Estuary Reserve are No Discharge Zones, and overboard discharge of boat sewage is prohibited.

Resident permits and the back municipal lots

Yearly resident parking permits are issued to village residents through an online application with a copy of the car registration, plus a piece of mail showing the village address when the registration address does not match. Resident permits work in the back municipal parking lots and the permitted railroad station lot only, and are not valid on Main Street, South Ocean Avenue, Railroad Avenue or Havens Ave.

Non-residents can apply online for a yearly parking permit with a copy of the car registration, and it covers the same back municipal lots and permitted railroad station lot.

Snow emergencies and the 2-inch rule

During a snow emergency, parking on all streets is prohibited, and if no hours are posted the ban runs for 24 hours after the snow or ice stops. Parking prohibitions in village lots are waived during a snow emergency, and cars may be moved to any of the lots.

Vehicles must be removed from village streets after an accumulation of 2 inches or more of snow.

Garbage pickup north and south of Main Street

Household garbage is picked up two times per week, with Monday and Thursday collection south of Main Street and Tuesday and Friday collection north of Main Street. Garbage cans are not set at the curb; village crews pick up the garbage by the side of the house, and cans need close-fitting covers and durable handles.

Recycling is brought to the curb on alternate Wednesdays. Village garbage collection does not take construction debris or hazardous waste.

Sewer connections and rental permits

Connecting to the village sewer requires an In-District or an Out-of-District Sewer Connection, depending on the property.

Rental permits are required through the Building and Housing Department, with separate applications for owner occupied and non-owner occupied rentals, and a rental inspection is scheduled for the property.

Saxton Middle School registration and the Montauk line

Patchogue-Medford School District enrolls new students through Central Registration at the rear of Saxton Middle School, by appointment or walk-in.

Patchogue has a Long Island Rail Road station on the Montauk line.
