Moving to Sarasota: who to call and what the city asks.

While the City and County manage public stormwater drainage systems, many pipes, swales and ponds in Sarasota are privately owned. The Bay Runner trolley, run jointly by the City of Sarasota and Sarasota County Breeze, is complimentary and links Lido Key, St. Armand's Circle and downtown Sarasota. The City of Sarasota downtown and St. Armands public garages do not permit back-in parking.

Residential parking permits and meter rules

For the downtown and St. Armands residential parking permits, an applicant must prove identity and show two matching forms of proof of current residency located within 1,000 feet of the parking facility.

At meters, no overnight RV parking is permitted, and vehicles need to fit within the allowed parking spaces.

City of Sarasota Utilities Department

The City of Sarasota Utilities Department provides drinking water, wastewater collection and reclaimed water to its customers.

Payments for City of Sarasota water and sewer connection work are made at the Utilities Billing Office at 1575 2nd Street.

Trash carts, bulk items and chemical drop-off

Garbage pick-up, yard waste and residential recycling questions go to 941-263-6170. Residents can request new or additional recycling bins or trash carts through the Click-2-Fix app.

The same solid waste page points residents to its Cart Smart tool, where typing in an item such as furniture or an appliance shows how to dispose of or recycle it.

Sarasota County residents can take accepted household items such as paints, pesticides, pool chemicals and used motor oil to a County Chemical Collection Center free of charge. Most household hazardous waste is not collected at the curb, and proof of county residency such as a driver's license, tax bill or utility bill may be required at the Chemical Collection Centers.

Sarasota County Schools registration

Sarasota County Schools has an attendance zone search that shows the elementary, middle and high schools for an address.

A parent or guardian must go with the student to the school's registrar to finish registration. Proof of residency can be an electric bill, water bill, property tax bill or rental or lease agreement in the registering parent's name.

Breeze Transit and Sarasota County Libraries

The Sarasota County Breeze Transit network includes bus and trolley routes, on-demand rideshare zones, and paratransit services.

Library cards from Sarasota County Libraries are free to all Sarasota County residents. A new cardholder can apply at any branch with identification and proof of residency in Sarasota County.
