Local services and rules

Moving to Carson City: who to call and what the city asks.

Carson City has no noise ordinance as such: excessive noise is handled by the Sheriff's Office under disturbing-the-peace laws, and complaints go to the Sheriff's Dispatch Center at 887-2677. Carson City is a consolidated municipality, so the city is its own county; Ormsby County was merged into it in 1969 to consolidate government services. A mule deer herd lives in town year-round and regularly feeds on plants used in residential landscaping. All dogs over three months of age must be licensed within 30 days of moving a dog into the city. A one year license costs $8.00 for an altered dog and $25.00 for an unaltered dog, with proof of current rabies vaccination required. The city's Streets Division performs regular street sweeping.

Water and sewer through the Carson City Utilities Department

NV Energy is the electric provider and Southwest Gas Corporation is the gas provider, both as listed on the city's utility services page.

Water and sewer are provided by the Carson City Utilities Department. All utility accounts must be in the name of the property owner; property management agencies can be included on billing with proper documentation on file. An establishment fee is billed for each new water account and appears on the first or second bill. A buyer must contact the utility billing office to activate service, and the account may be put in the buyer's name effective the close of escrow date.

The Public Works new-customer page says Utilities staff are available to answer questions and help with the water and sewer system, utility billing procedures, the recycling program and water emergencies.

Waste Management, the landfill and the hazardous waste facility

Curbside trash and recycling service is provided by Waste Management, under a franchise agreement with Carson City. Residents set up service with Waste Management, which can be reached at (775) 343-7596.

The Carson City Landfill is at 3600 Flint Drive and is open Monday through Saturday, 7:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Proof of residency is required to receive in-county rates. Aluminum cans, tin cans, newspaper, plastic and glass bottles, cardboard, motor oil, antifreeze and car batteries can be dropped off for free recycling, but not in plastic bags.

Carson City residents can take oil-based paint, varnish, stain, gasoline, pesticides and herbicides to the Household Hazardous Waste Collection Facility for free, on Thursday afternoons between 1:30 and 4:00 p.m., by appointment only. Water based latex paints and propane cylinders of any kind are not accepted.

Infinite Campus, library cards and the July property tax bill

The Carson City School District registers new students online through Infinite Campus, and families must then follow up with their school of attendance to complete enrollment before the child can attend.

The Carson City Library gives out free library cards. An applicant needs a completed application and either an NV picture ID or a picture ID plus proof of NV address; replacement cards are $1.

Property taxes are billed each July to the address on file with the Carson City Assessor's Office, and the Carson City Treasurer collects them.

JAC buses and Carson City Airport

JAC (Jump Around Carson) is the city's public transit system, with buses on fixed routes plus JAC Assist curb-to-curb service for eligible persons with disabilities. JAC routes run Monday through Friday from 6:30am to 7:30pm, with a Saturday schedule from 8:30am to 4:30pm.

Carson City Airport, on College Parkway, is used regularly by private and air taxi operators.
