Moving to Truckee: who to call and what the city asks.

Gas meters in Truckee must be protected from snow, so a gas meter shed is required unless the meter is in a protected location such as under an engineered deck. Trash service is limited too: each resident gets one 32-gallon can of trash per week, with no can averaging. On the street, vehicles parked in a Town of Truckee right-of-way during snow season, November 1 to April 30, are subject to immediate tow and/or a citation for obstructing snow removal.

Downtown paid parking and plow rules

Paid parking in downtown Truckee is enforced daily, including weekends and holidays, from 10 am to 6 pm.

Town plow operations generally begin when snow accumulation is 4 inches or greater.

Bear-proof garbage containers must be placed on private property, outside the Town right-of-way.

Tahoe Truckee Sierra Disposal collection

Tahoe Truckee Sierra Disposal (TTSD) provides waste and recycling service within the Town of Truckee. To find the collection day for an address, contact TTSD at (530) 583-7800.

Green and blue carts are serviced every other week on opposite weeks. Yard waste carts are serviced May to November and recycling carts year-round.

Trash should not be put out before 5 am unless a bear shed is used, and containers must be placed behind the snow pole line and removed from the Town right-of-way the same day as collection.

Eastern Regional Landfill at 900 Cabin Creek Road

The Eastern Regional Landfill Material Recovery Facility at 900 Cabin Creek Road is operated by Tahoe Truckee Sierra Disposal and accepts trash, recyclables, green waste and a variety of other items. It is open Monday to Saturday, 8am to 4pm.

Household hazardous waste can be dropped off for free at the Eastern Regional Landfill, by appointment on drop-off event days only. Residential events are held every third Saturday of the month, with a load limit of 15 gallons or 125 lbs; call (530) 583-7800 to schedule.

Truckee Donner Public Utility District, Southwest Gas and the Sanitary District

Truckee Donner Public Utility District manages area electricity and water. It charges a $60 setup fee to open a residential account. A security deposit may be required when starting service, and deposits are credited back after 24 months of good payment history.

Southwest Gas is named by the Town as the gas company, and it sets the requirements for gas meter installations.

Truckee Sanitary District handles collection and conveyance of wastewater in the greater Truckee area.

Tahoe Truckee Unified School District enrollment

Tahoe Truckee Unified School District serves all public schools in the Truckee community.

New students enroll online through Aeries, in English or Spanish. The school then asks for proof of residency, such as a mortgage or rental statement, a utility bill, or a declaration of residency signed by a parent or guardian.

The district offers a neighborhood school for every region and is open-enrollment, so families can apply to another school in the district through an IntraDistrict Open Enrollment Form.

TART Connect and the Reno-Tahoe airport shuttle

TART Connect serves all areas of Truckee with free, door-to-door, on-demand rides, requested through an app or by calling 530-553-0653. It runs 6:30 am to midnight in summer and winter, and 6:30 am to 10 pm in fall and spring.

Reno-Tahoe International Airport (RNO) is a 30-minute drive from Truckee, with more than 130 daily flights. North Lake Tahoe Express runs year-round scheduled shuttles between the airport and Truckee, and reservations are required 24 hours in advance.

Transient Occupancy Registration Certificates for short-term rentals

Short-term rentals need a Transient Occupancy Registration Certificate from the Town, which has capped the number of certificates at 1,255.
