Moving to Dahlonega: who to call and what the city asks.

Dahlonega is the county seat of Lumpkin County, in the foothills of the North Georgia mountains, about 70 miles north of Atlanta. Water in Dahlonega comes from the Yahoola Creek Reservoir, a 140-acre lake built through a joint venture with Lumpkin County, and is treated at the Water Treatment Facility of the City. The City no longer offers large item garbage pickup, which covers items such as washers, dryers, refrigerators and furniture.

Garbage pick-up from the City is mandatory for residential and commercial customers. Only items placed in the container furnished by the City are picked up, and each trash receptacle must have a city sticker.

The Lumpkin County Recycling Center at 490 Barlow Rd in Dahlonega is open Monday through Saturday, 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM. Visitors cross the scale house and speak to the attendant.

County recycling takes cardboard, mixed paper, plastics #1 and #2, scrap metal, aluminum and glass. Each material goes into the right dumpster, clean and kept apart from household waste.

City-owned lots around the Dahlonega square have 15 minute loading, 3 hour, all day, EV charging, handicap and motorcycle spaces.

Lumpkin County Transit is available by appointment, and reservations must be made at least 24 hours in advance. It can take riders to work, the doctor, grocery store, library and restaurants anywhere within Lumpkin County.
