Local services and rules

Moving to Gainesville: who to call and what the city asks.

Residential properties inside the Gainesville city limits get garbage and recycling service automatically with their City water and sewer account, and the city says you cannot opt out of sanitation services. A fee of $32.10 on the water bill pays for once-weekly garbage removal, a landfill fee and once-weekly recycling service. Cresswind at Lake Lanier, Copper Springs, Sandridge Commons, The Bluffs at Lanier and Chicopee Crossing have no city sanitation service. Gainesville is the county seat of Hall County, Georgia.

Georgia Power, Jackson EMC, Liberty Utilities and Atlanta Gas Light

Two providers supply electricity in the City of Gainesville, Georgia Power and Jackson EMC. The city's page says to check your power meter if you are unsure: a Georgia Power meter says "Southern Company" and a Jackson EMC meter says "Jackson EMC".

City of Gainesville residents may choose their natural gas provider from Liberty Utilities or Atlanta Gas Light.

Department of Water Resources accounts, deposits and hours

The City of Gainesville Department of Water Resources provides water to almost all Hall County residents. New water customers use the city's Application for Service for new customers form, and questions go to Customer Account Services at 770-535-6878.

The department provides and maintains sewer lines for customers inside Gainesville city limits. It also bills for sewer service in other municipalities including Hall County, Braselton, Oakwood and Flowery Branch.

Water Resources deposits depend on meter size, and an extra deposit is required each time an account is disconnected for nonpayment, until the deposit total reaches the maximum amount. Drive-through, walk-up window and customer service hours are Monday to Friday, 8 am to 5 pm.

Gainesville Solid Waste Division collection and bins

The Gainesville Solid Waste Division provides once-weekly garbage collection at the curb. To request a recycling bin or an extra garbage cart, call the division at 770-532-0493.

Neither garbage nor recycling is picked up on city-observed holidays; residents hold it until the following day.

White goods, curbside limits and mattresses

Appliances called white goods (including refrigerators, stoves, washing machines, water heaters and electronics) and other special pickups must be scheduled in advance with the Solid Waste Division at 770-532-0493, for an additional fee billed on the next water bill.

Each customer's curbside pickup is limited to one cubic yard per week, with a maximum of four cubic yards per month, without additional fees.

At the Hall County Landfill, mattresses and box springs are $10.00 per item in addition to the weight of the load.

Hall County Recycling Center, compactor sites and landfill

Hall County runs a Recycling Center at 1008 Chestnut Street, open Monday to Friday, 7:30am to 4:00pm, and 12 compactor sites. The compactor sites take cardboard, paper, household plastic containers, cans, glass, motor oil and clothes.

The Hall County Landfill at 1700 Oakbrook Drive does not accept hazardous waste, chemical waste, pressurized tanks, liquid waste or yard debris. It has a $20.00 minimum tipping fee covering the first 665 pounds of a load, and only waste generated in Hall County is accepted at the landfill and compactor sites.

Hall County recycles only latex, oil and solvent based paints (no mixed paints), at a charge per container.

Gainesville City School System registration

The Gainesville City School System registers students through one central online process, not at individual schools. The Enrollment Management Office is at 770-536-5275 ext 5138.

The system requires proof of residence in the district when a student enrolls and whenever a change of residence occurs, plus birth date verification and two proofs of residency.

WeGo rideshare

WeGo is operated by the City of Gainesville and funded in partnership with Hall County Government, Georgia Department of Transportation, and the Federal Transit Administration. Passengers book WeGo rideshare trips with the free WeGo Powered by Via app, or by calling 770-503-3333, ext. 1.

Hall County rabies vaccination and yard sale limits

Hall County Animal Services says dogs, cats and other domesticated animals must be inoculated annually for rabies and wear proof of vaccination at all times; rabies vaccines are by appointment only.

Hall County defines a yard sale as a sale of used household belongings at a principal residence. Such sales may be held no more than 4 times a year, each lasting no more than 3 consecutive days, and are exempt from fees. More than 4 a year is treated as a business needing a license.
