Local services and rules

Moving to South Windsor: who to call and what the city asks.

South Windsor is a town in Hartford County, Connecticut. Raking leaves into the street violates the Town ordinance; the Town collects leaves by vacuum from the edge of the property. Pushing snow from your property back onto the street is against Town ordinance.

Overnight parking, snow storms and street sweeping

Overnight street parking is not allowed from November 15th through April 15th, and violators may be ticketed. No vehicle may be parked on a public street during a snow or ice storm that has been in progress for one hour or more; vehicles not removed are towed at the owner's expense.

Street sweeping makes two passes of all districts, from March to the end of June.

All American Waste, recycling and bulky pickup

All American Waste is the contracted provider for the Town of South Windsor for refuse and recycling collection; its number is 860-289-7850. Recycling is bi-weekly single stream: all recyclables go unsorted into one larger recycling cart.

Bulky waste is collected during the 1st full week of each month, on the household's scheduled trash day. Bulky items must be separated from other refuse and placed at the curb by 7:00am for collection. Televisions, computers, printers and other covered electronics are not accepted as bulky waste, and neither are pianos or construction material.

Scrap metal, propane tanks and other drop-offs

Scrap metal pickup is scheduled by calling All American Waste at (860) 289-7850. Refrigerators and freezers must have the doors removed for scrap metal collection, and propane tanks are not accepted in scrap metal pickup.

Residents can bring food scraps to the Town Garage at 157 Burgess Road. Used motor oil in a screw-cap container can be put curbside next to the blue recycle cart for pickup. Area retailers will accept oil and latex paint of any brand at their store locations.

Brush may be delivered by the homeowner to Green Earth Recycling in Bloomfield. Residents with leaves left after the second pass can drop them off at the composting facility on Burgess Road.

Connecticut Water Company, the MDC and the sewer authority

Water comes from either Connecticut Water Company or the MDC depending on the street. The Water Pollution Control Authority approves sewer connections or expansions. South Windsor's wastewater treatment facility is on Vibert Road.

Library cards, dog licenses and Bradley Airport

South Windsor residents can get library cards with proof of residency. A library card is valid for three years from the date of issue and can be renewed at the Circulation Desk.

Every dog must be licensed at six months old and then annually in June; a valid rabies certificate is required, and a new owner must license within 30 days.

Bradley International Airport, in Windsor Locks, is owned and operated by the Connecticut Airport Authority.
