Local services and rules

Moving to Enfield: who to call and what the city asks.

Enfield is a town in Hartford County, Connecticut, and the town collects fire district taxes together with regular town taxes. Sewer costs are billed based on water usage rather than through the property tax mill rate. Enfield also runs its own local fixed-route bus system, the Magic Carpet Bus.

Thompsonville snow parking ban

In the Thompsonville section, a parking ban goes into effect when 3 inches or more of snow is forecast; cars left on the street can be ticketed and towed. Owners of property with a sidewalk have 24 hours from the end of the snow event to make the sidewalk passable.

Gray, blue and brown tipper barrels

The town collects trash and recycling Monday through Thursday each week; residents who are unsure of their day can call the Solid Waste Division at 860-763-7527. The town will only pick up trash that is in an approved gray tipper barrel. Gray tipper barrels are sold at the Public Works Department, 40 Moody Road, Monday through Friday 8:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., and can be delivered.

Recycling goes in blue tipper barrels provided by the town and is collected every other week on the same day as trash. Yard waste in brown tipper barrels is picked up on Fridays from April until the beginning of December, except holiday weeks and when weather does not permit.

Bulky pickup and the Transfer Station on Town Farm Road

Items too large for regular weekly collection (over 60 pounds or more than 5 feet across) are collected by appointment only. The town does not do bulky pickups at apartment complexes or condo complexes. Refrigerators, air conditioners, dehumidifiers and other items with freon are not part of bulky pickup; they go to the Transfer Station.

The Transfer Station at 77 Town Farm Road takes recycling, bulky waste and yard waste. It is open Tuesday through Friday 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and Saturday 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Permits are bought at the station, and a vehicle registration showing Enfield residency is required. Scrap metal, cardboard, televisions, microwaves and electronics can be taken there without a permit.

Sewer billing and the Assessor's office

Over 95% of homes and businesses in Enfield are connected to the municipal sewer system. Questions about sewer fee calculations or sewer billing go to the sewer billing company at (860) 265-1197. Sewer fees are the responsibility of the property owner.

A new property owner should update the mailing address with the Assessor's office at (860) 253-6339 so tax bills arrive.

Enfield Public Schools registration

Enfield Public Schools takes new student registrations for grades PK-12 online. Registration needs a birth certificate and documents showing proof of residency, such as a utility bill, purchase or lease agreement, rent receipt, deposit receipt or driver's license. Registration questions can be answered at 860-253-6557.

Dog licenses, voter registration, the library card and local services

Dogs must be licensed at 6 months old or within 30 days of adopting an older dog, and renewed every June. A valid rabies certificate must be provided or on file to get or renew a dog license.

Residents can register with the Enfield Registrar of Voters at Town Hall, 820 Enfield Street, by mailing the voter registration form, or at the Town Clerk or online through the Connecticut Secretary of State.

Residents without a library card can register online for a temporary card, then pick up the full card at the library with photo ID and proof of residency (if not on the license).

Dial-A-Ride gives in-town rides to residents who are over 60 or disabled. Enfield has a Fair Rent Commission that hears complaints about excessive rental charges. Bradley International Airport is in Windsor Locks and is owned and operated by the Connecticut Airport Authority.
