Local services and rules

Moving to Fairfax: who to call and what the city asks.

Fairfax is an independent city in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Older residents and persons with disabilities can request backdoor collection, where crews remove trash and recycling at the door; yard waste is not included. A composting drop-off center for food scraps sits beside the Community Garden on the west side of City Hall at 10455 Armstrong Street, open only to those who live and work in the city.

Commercial vehicles and residential parking decals

A resident may park one commercial vehicle not exceeding 9,000 pounds in a private driveway, as long as it does not advertise a business located at that residence. Commercial vehicles may not be parked on public or private streets in a residential zone. Parking Enforcement is at 703.293.7100.

Vehicles garaged in a residential permit parking district must display a city residential parking permit, also called a decal. Decals are picked up at the Treasurer's Office in City Hall or mailed to the residence once personal property tax and the vehicle registration fee are paid.

City trash carts and the Route Finder

Trash carts from the city come in 32-gallon and 64-gallon sizes, with secure lids and wheels.

A Route Finder tool gives the refuse and recycling collection schedule for an address. Questions go to 703-385-7837.

County drop-off centers on West Ox Road and Furnace Road

City residents may use the Fairfax County Waste and Recycling Drop-Off Centers: the I-66 Transfer Station at 4618 West Ox Road and the I-95 Landfill at 9850 Furnace Road. They take refuse, recycling, household hazardous waste, electronics, glass and compost.

Proof of residency may be required at the centers. Accepted proof includes a driver's license, state ID card, property tax bill or utility bill.

Dominion Energy, Washington Gas and Fairfax Water

Electric, natural gas and water service come from private utility companies: Dominion Energy for electric, Washington Gas for gas and Fairfax Water for water.

City-owned schools and CUE Bus

City of Fairfax students attend the four City-owned schools, which Fairfax County Public Schools manages and operates under a School Services Agreement. New students register through the Fairfax County Public Schools registration page; the FCPS Student Registration office is at 703-204-6740.

CUE Bus serves the city, connecting riders to George Mason University, the Vienna/Fairfax-GMU Metrorail Station, Old Town, neighborhoods, schools and parks.

Dog licenses and voter registration

A lifetime dog license is required for dogs owned by city residents.

Voter registration applications go to the Office of Voter Registration & Elections, in person or by mail.

Rental licensing, occupancy limits and the flood plain

Rental properties in the city must hold a City of Fairfax Business License. A rental property may be occupied by no more than one family plus three unrelated individuals.

The city publishes a Flood Hazard Map and floodplain information. Residents may call (703) 273-6073 about the City Flood Plain.
