The City of Jonesboro provides citywide curbside garbage collection to all residential homes, on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, and property owners pay $225.00 per year. Jonesboro, the county seat of Clayton County, Georgia, also has a truck route for trucks with over six wheels, set in the city code to redirect truck traffic away from city streets. Garbage Can Timing and Special Pick-Up Fees

Garbage cans must be set out at the curb no earlier than 6:00 p.m. the day before collection and no later than 7 a.m. on collection day, and retrieved by 9 p.m. on collection day. Additional garbage cans for a residential property are $120.00 each per year.

Special pick-ups have their own fee schedule: appliances $25, mattress and box springs $10 per piece, large furniture $15, and tires $5 (tires with rims $10). Fees are paid at City Hall before pick-up. Larger amounts of special pick-up are quoted individually, and residents call City Hall to schedule an estimate.

Clayton County Water Authority Service

The Clayton County Water Authority starts residential water service online or by phone, and new service connections are scheduled for the next business day. The Authority does not make new service connections on weekends or holidays. Applying takes picture identification and, for property owners, proof of ownership, along with the appropriate deposit.

The Authority sets the deposit for a residential account (single family houses, townhouses, duplexes or quadraplexes) by the customer's credit rating. A residential water deposit is refundable after 24 months of continuous timely payment history.

Dog and Cat Licenses and Clayton County School Enrollment

A dog or cat over four months old brought into the City of Jonesboro must be licensed within 14 days of entry; the license is obtained from Clayton County.

A student new to Clayton County Public Schools is enrolled through the online registration process, with all required enrollment documents.

The Clayton County Department of Election administers Jonesboro's municipal elections. Jonesboro City Council candidates run at-large and are voted on by the registered voters of the entire city, not by districts or posts.
