Local services and rules

Moving to Libertyville: who to call and what the city asks.

Libertyville is a village in Libertyville Township, Lake County, Illinois. Parking is prohibited on all Village streets from 2am to 6am, with signs at the roadway entrances into the Village. Residents renting a 95-gallon landscape waste cart may put fruit and vegetable organic waste in it for collection along with landscape waste as part of residential composting service.

Overnight parking permission, snow rules and the vehicle sticker

The Police Department takes requests for overnight street parking permission. It is capped at three consecutive days at a time and nine total days per calendar year. It is not granted or valid during a snow emergency.

During snow events, on-street parking is prohibited from 10 pm to 6 am. Plowing of village streets begins when snow is more than one inch deep and cold temperatures indicate there will be no melting.

Village residents need a Village vehicle sticker under local ordinance. New residents, and anyone buying a new vehicle, get a 90 day grace period to buy the sticker. Stickers are valid from May 1 through April 30 and can be bought at Village Hall, by mail or online.

Groot Industries pickup, electronic waste and chemical drop-off

Residential waste and recycling service for single and multi family homes is provided by Groot Industries, Inc. under a Village contract. Typical pick-up days are Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, with one pick-up a week for each residence depending on its location. New residents call Groot at 1-877-40G-ROOT (1-877-404-7668) to establish service.

Electronic waste curbside pick-up is offered through Groot on the regular refuse pick-up day. Groot must be contacted at least one business day in advance.

Household chemical waste such as oil based paints, flammable liquids, automotive products and garden chemicals can be dropped off through the Solid Waste Agency of Lake County, with appointments required for the year-round program. The drop-off is held at the agency's Gurnee facility at 1311 North Estes Street, on the second Saturday and the fourth Monday of each month except December.

Electricity, gas, water and the flood insurance rating

Commonwealth Edison supplies electricity and North Shore Gas supplies natural gas, and other providers are available for both.

Lake Michigan water is provided through the Central Lake County Joint Action Water Agency. The village water and sewer billing department handles water account set-up, and also bills for wastewater treatment.

The Village participates in the Community Rating System, which gives residents with National Flood Insurance Program policies a premium discount.

Pace, Metra and the downtown station permit

The community is served by Pace Suburban Bus and Metra Commuter Rail. The Milwaukee District North line serves the downtown station on Milwaukee Avenue and the Prairie Crossing station on the west side of the Village, with service north to Fox Lake and south to Chicago's Union Station.

The North Central Metra line from a second Prairie Crossing station runs south to Union Station and includes a stop at O'Hare International Airport.

The downtown Metra station requires a parking permit, and the Police Department keeps a waiting list when the lot is at capacity.

District #70, District #128 and the Cook Memorial library card

Libertyville District #70 is the elementary school district for the majority of residents. Some residents in the southern part of the Village attend Vernon Hills District #73. High School District #128 includes Libertyville High School and Vernon Hills High School.

Residents of the Cook Memorial Public Library District apply for a library card at any of its locations, and all residents are eligible. Library cards are valid for three years.
