Local services and rules

Moving to Oakland: who to call and what the city asks.

Oakland enforces its parking meters citywide on Sundays from noon to 6 p.m. The city's daylighting rule prohibits parking within 20 feet of a marked or unmarked crosswalk, or 15 feet where a curb extension is present, and no signs or red paint are needed for it to apply. Every parcel in the Wildfire Urban Interface (WUI) Fire Area receives an annual vegetation inspection.

The Obstruction Permit for blocking parking or a lane

An Obstruction Permit is required before blocking any street parking, curb, sidewalk or traffic lane. No Parking signs are issued with the permit and must be posted 72 hours ahead of any obstruction.

Applications go by email to DOTOnlinePermits@oaklandca.gov, or in person at the Transportation Permit Counter on the 2nd Floor of 250 Frank H. Ogawa Plaza. The permit counter phone is 510-238-3199.

State and city codes prohibit commercial vehicles on some streets and designate specific routes for their travel. The city publishes a truck route map.

For construction in a residential area, the city's noise page lists 7:00 am to 9:00 pm at a 70 dB maximum for five minutes in one hour.

Residential permit parking and street sweeping

Streets in residential permit parking areas are marked with two colored lines, and the city map shows which area an address is in.

Regular residential permits last 12 months. The number issued per address depends on the area: Area F allows 1, and Areas N and Q allow 2. Residents can also buy hanging visitor permits valid for one day or two weeks, up to five of both on any calendar day.

Parking in a restricted area during a scheduled street sweeping can bring a ticket. Schedules are on the city's Street Sweeping page.

Ava Community Energy, PG&E and EBMUD accounts

Ava Community Energy lists Oakland among the communities it serves, on its Bright Choice plan. Ava sells electricity by the kilowatt-hour.

Gas is billed in therms on a PG&E bill.

For water and sewer, a new customer can start EBMUD service online for a $65 account establishment fee, which appears on the first bill. Starting by phone costs $80. The online option is only for single family residences in good standing with their water bills. Multi-family units and businesses call EBMUD Customer Service at 1-866-403-2683.

Waste Management and California Waste Solutions

Two companies work with the City of Oakland, according to the city's recycling page for single-family homes. Waste Management of Alameda County, Inc. handles trash, compost and bulky service. California Waste Solutions handles recycling, household batteries and used motor oil.

Carts go out by 6 a.m. on the scheduled pickup day, on the sidewalk with lids closed and handles facing away from the street.

All Oakland residents, including renters, can schedule a free bulky curbside pickup and a free bulky drop-off with Waste Management by calling 1-888-WM-BULKY or online.

Curbside bulky pickup takes up to four cubic yards of bulky waste and a limited number of large items such as appliances, mattresses and tires. Single-family home bulky appointments are normally scheduled within two weeks.

The Davis Street Resource Recovery Complex and the hazardous waste facility

A bulky drop-off of up to four cubic yards goes to the Davis Street Resource Recovery Complex in San Leandro, by appointment, free once a year for each resident.

The Household Hazardous Waste Facility at 2100 East 7th Street, Oakland, takes paints, solvents, pesticides, spray cans, batteries and electronic waste, which never belong in curbside carts. Drop-offs there are limited to 15 gallons or 125 pounds per vehicle.

The Bay Bridge toll, AC Transit and OAK

The San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge collects tolls westbound, on the eastern side of the bridge.

AC Transit is based in Oakland and serves an East Bay service area across Alameda and Contra Costa counties.

Oakland San Francisco Bay Airport (OAK) has nonstop airline service across the United States and to destinations abroad.

Oakland Unified enrollment and dog licenses

Oakland Unified School District enrolls Oakland students, with an on-time application window each year and a later window for those who miss it.

A rabies vaccination is required before a dog can be licensed through Oakland Animal Services.
