Local services and rules

Moving to Union City: who to call and what the city asks.

Ava serves residential, business and municipal electricity customers throughout Union City. Customers can choose the Renewable 100 service from Ava or return to PG&E service at any time. The Alameda County Water District (ACWD) provides water service in Fremont, Newark and Union City. Republic Services and Tri-CED Community Recycling are the exclusive franchised collection service providers for the City of Union City.

Truck routes, Clipper passes and BART parking

Chapter 10.40 of the Union City Municipal Code details the designated truck routes.

Union City Transit offers 31-Day passes only on Clipper. Clipper works on Union City Transit, BART, AC Transit, Dumbarton Express, and many other Bay Area transit operators.

BART operates a parking lot on the west side of the Union City BART Station.

Starting ACWD water and Union Sanitary District sewer service

New water service can be started with ACWD by phone at (510) 668-4200 on weekdays, in person, or online. ACWD requires at least one business day notice, and an account establishment field charge appears on the first bill.

Union Sanitary District provides wastewater collection, treatment, and disposal services to Fremont, Newark, and Union City. Its sewer service charges are collected on the Alameda County property tax roll, where they appear as a single line item.

Cart sizes, pickup day and the 6:00 AM rule

Most single-family households have one 35-gallon gray landfill cart, one 64-gallon blue recycle cart, and one 96-gallon green compost cart. Carts may be downsized or upsized, according to the city single-family residential services page.

To start landfill collection service, a resident contacts Republic Services at 510.657.3500. To start recycle and compost collection service, a resident contacts Tri-CED Community Recycling at 510.429.8030.

Each single-family home is serviced on the same day each week, except when the service day falls on an observed holiday. Containers go out by 6:00 AM on the scheduled pickup day.

Bulky item collection through Republic Services

Single-family households with individual cart service get two bulky item collections a year at no additional cost. They are scheduled by calling Republic Services at 510.657.3500, and a collection is scheduled within 21 days of the call.

Republic Services collects a total of 4 cubic yards per bulky item collection. Each scheduled collection takes one major household appliance, such as a water heater, washing machine or dryer.

Apartment and multi-family residents contact their property manager to arrange a bulky item collection, for an additional fee.

Hazardous waste, electronics and bottle redemption

Union City residents can take household hazardous waste to an Alameda County drop-off facility or to County-sponsored one-day drop-off events. The closest facilities are in Fremont and Hayward. Household hazardous waste such as pesticides, fluorescent lamps, medications, paints and treated wood may not go in any recycle, compost, or landfill bin or cart.

The Fremont Recycling and Transfer Station is at 41149 Boyce Rd, Fremont, and is open Monday to Saturday from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM.

Tri-CED Community Recycling, at 33377 Western Avenue in Union City, accepts electronic waste year-round. It is also a certified California Redemption Center and pays for aluminum cans, plastic beverage bottles and glass bottles labeled with the CRV symbol.

New Haven Unified School District enrollment

Union City is served by the New Haven Unified School District, which has schools in Union City and Hayward.

New Haven enrolls students online and requires uploaded copies of the required documents. Enrollment requires address confirmation: the parent or guardian must have two documents in their name listing the home address.

AC Library cards and the Alvarado-Niles Road branch

A library card from AC Library is free to anyone who lives, works, or goes to school in California. A card can be obtained in person at any AC Library location by showing ID.

AC Library has a Union City branch at 34007 Alvarado-Niles Road.

Dog licenses and online voter registration

Dogs in Union City must be licensed from four months of age, and the license is renewed annually. A dog needs a current rabies vaccination before it can be licensed. No more than two adult dogs may be kept on any property without an Animal Fancier Permit from the City Manager.

The Alameda County voting website has an online application to register to vote.
