Local services and rules

Moving to Salt Lake City: who to call and what the city asks.

Salt Lake City is the county seat of Salt Lake County. A vehicle, boat, trailer or motor home may not stay parked on a public street for more than 48 hours, and moving it to a new spot on the same side of the street does not reset the timer. Every dumpster or container placed in the street needs four lighted Type 1 barricades, one at each corner, and the city does not provide the barricades.

Container, dumpster and parking meter permits

A parking permit is required when a container is placed in a restricted parking area such as near a parking meter, in a 2-hour zone or in a residential permit area. A traffic control permit is required for any container or dumpster placed on the shoulder of the road.

A parking meter permit is needed when work in the public right-of-way makes parking unavailable. Applications are due at least 24 business hours ahead, are not taken by phone and are not accepted the same day.

Residential and guest parking permits

Some areas of the city have residential parking permits, and those who live, own property or work there may qualify. Qualifying streets have signs with an area number to include on the application.

An application needs proof of residency, such as a lease or deed, and a driver's license. Approval takes up to 2 days and the permit arrives by mail in 2 to 3 weeks. A temporary permit is available after payment.

Guest permits are valid for up to 2 days and are meant for short-term visitors such as cleaners, babysitters or gardeners. They are requested by calling 801-535-6630.

Sidewalk snow removal and plowing

Snow on the sidewalk next to a property must be removed within twenty-four hours after it stops falling (Section 14.20.070 of the City Code). Civil Enforcement handles enforcement at 801-535-7225.

The city's snow crews aim to clear snow and ice within 36 hours after a storm, plowing arterial streets before neighborhood and residential streets, which are Priority 3.

Call 2 Haul bulk pickup and drop-off sites

The Call 2 Haul program picks up old furniture, mattresses, appliances, refrigerators, tires, electronic waste and bulky green waste at the home. Two scheduled pickups a year, one bulk and one green waste, are included with the city's residential curbside garbage service.

Set-out guidelines allow items to be put out no more than 24 hours before the scheduled pickup date. The pile should be roughly 8 feet wide, 4 feet deep and 4 feet high, about the size of a pickup truck bed or an SUV. Larger loads go to the Landfill or a private hauler.

Recycling drop-off sites open to the public include the Salt Lake Valley Landfill at 6030 W California Ave (Mon. to Sat., 7 am to 5 pm) and the Trans-Jordan Landfill at 10473 S Bacchus Hwy.

The Salt Lake County Household Hazardous Waste Collection Center (385-468-4380) is open Monday through Saturday, 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM and closed on county-observed holidays. It takes items such as fuels, paint and pesticides, but not radioactive materials or explosives such as ammunition and fireworks.

Public Utilities water, waste and recycling service

Salt Lake City Public Utilities starts water service together with waste and recycling service. Call 801-483-6900 or go in person to 1530 S West Temple, open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays. A new account can also be applied for online; customer service is at (801) 483-6900.

City curbside service is offered to residents of single family homes and some duplexes and triplexes. Apartment residents are covered by a separate recycling rule. Waste and recycling service is included on the Public Utilities water bill once a resident signs up.

Under the curbside rules, carts go out by 7 a.m. on collection day and come back in the same day after pickup. The city suspends compost collection for a short time each winter.

Rental licenses, flood zones, TRAX and the airport

All residential rental properties in the city need a business license.

Public Utilities can help residents determine whether a property is in a flood zone. Localized flooding is reported to the emergency dispatch center at 801-483-6700.

UTA runs the TRAX light rail: the Blue Line from Draper to Salt Lake City, the Red Line from South Jordan to the University of Utah and the Green Line from West Valley to the Salt Lake International Airport. Salt Lake City International Airport is run by the Salt Lake City Department of Airports and is located five miles northwest of downtown Salt Lake City.
