Local services and rules

Moving to Sandy: who to call and what the city asks.

Parking on Sandy's city streets is not allowed during a snow storm or during the 24 hours after the end of the storm, and police officers can cite residents for it, according to the city's snow information. Depending on the storm, it can be 12-18 hours after a storm ends before a plow enters a residential neighborhood.

Street rules and police dispatch

Blowing or pushing snow into any city street is not allowed. Noise ordinance complaints and vehicles parked on the street are handled by police dispatch at (801) 799-3000, per Sandy Code Enforcement.

A city dumpster can be placed on the street or on private property. In winter the resident may be required to place it in the driveway because of snow removal, according to the dumpster program.

Utility Billing and city water

The City provides water service to customers within Sandy City boundaries, and bills it through its Utility Billing division. To begin or end water, waste and other city utility service, the number is the Utility Billing office at (801) 568-7110.

Garbage and recycling carts

The city provides waste collection service to each single-family dwelling and duplex within Sandy City boundaries, as the same Utility Billing page states.

The base garbage service covers one 96-gallon blue waste can and one 96-gallon green recycle bin. Extra cans are arranged through Sandy City Utility Billing at (801) 568-7110. Garbage and recycling cans go out on the curb by 7:00 AM on pickup day, at least 2 feet apart.

Bulk waste pile, dumpster loans and mattress recycling

Sandy City runs a bulk waste program for city residents only, with one bulk waste pile per home. Items must be placed curbside no sooner than 72 hours before the scheduled collection date.

The program accepts mattresses, box springs, bed frames, furniture, appliances with the refrigerant removed and tagged, and water heaters. Items not on the list are not picked up.

Beyond the semi-annual bulk collection, a resident can get a 30 cubic yard dumpster delivered to the home up to two times a year for up to 72 hours, for a fee. The dumpster program is for residents only, not businesses or commercial contractors.

A mattress or box spring can also be recycled through Spring Back Utah for a fee.

Salt Lake County hazardous waste center and the Trans-Jordan transfer station

Salt Lake County homes can drop off household hazardous waste free at the Salt Lake County Household Hazardous Waste Collection Center, 8805 South 700 West, Monday to Saturday 7 AM to 5 PM. Paint, pesticides, used motor oil and other chemicals are on the accepted list.

The same center accepts residential e-waste (computers, monitors, televisions, radios and phones) free of charge.

Any item containing Freon, such as a refrigerator or freezer, must go to the landfill, where a residential fee is charged to have the Freon removed and disposed of.

The Trans-Jordan Landfill Transfer Station at 8813 South 700 West, Sandy, takes glass for recycling Monday to Saturday, 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM, and also accepts clean paper, plastic and flattened cardboard.

Canyons School District boundaries and TRAX stations

A student living inside the neighborhood boundary of the school they want to attend can enroll as a new student at any time with Canyons School District. Living outside that boundary means applying through School Choice Open Enrollment.

TRAX light rail has stations in Sandy and connects to a light-rail system that operates throughout Salt Lake County. A Frontrunner commuter train station run by Utah Transit Authority sits just across the border in neighboring South Jordan, per the city's transportation information.

Pet licenses at the Sandy City Animal Shelter

Sandy requires a license for all dogs and cats 4 months and older, and each animal needs a current rabies vaccination to get one. Applications are made by mail or in person at the Sandy City Animal Shelter, according to the pet license application page.

A pet kept at a residence for more than 30 days must be licensed with the city, and only 3 dogs are permitted at one residence.

CityServe app and Salt Lake County voter registration

The city has a Moving to Sandy page with the climate, important phone numbers such as City Hall at (801)-568-7100, and links on schools, library, utilities and housing. The city also asks new residents to download its CityServe app for service requests and notifications.

Voters in Sandy register through Salt Lake County Elections, reachable at (385) 468-7400 or through slco.org. Per the city's voter registration page, online registration needs a current Utah Drivers License or ID Card.
