Local services and rules

Moving to Warrenton: who to call and what the city asks.

Warrenton is a town in Fauquier County, Virginia, and is the county seat; it is an incorporated town, not an independent city. Residents of the incorporated town pay both town and county taxes on property and personal property. The town also has a designated Historic District centered on the central business district and its surrounding residential neighborhoods. Work in the district goes through a Certificate of Appropriateness application, reviewed by town staff or the Architectural Review Board depending on the scope of work.

Snow emergency routes and sidewalk clearing

Parking is unlawful during snow events on designated snow emergency routes, including Main Street, East and West Lee Street, Falmouth Street and Culpeper Street. Vehicles left there may be removed by the Police Department.

Occupants of a house abutting a paved sidewalk must clear snow from it within six hours after the snow stops falling. If the snow fell during the night or on a Sunday, the deadline is noon the following day.

Water and sewer accounts with the town

Water and sewer service covers the corporate limits of the town as well as the Ivy Hill, Warrenton Lakes, Windsor Ridge, and Foxland Village subdivisions.

Property owners request a new account by telephone at (540) 347-2678 between 8:30 AM and 4:30 PM, or by returning a request form in person or by email. Tenants must submit either a copy of a current signed lease or a Homeowner Authorization Form from the landlord.

Water bills are usually mailed on the last day of the month and are due on the 20th day of the month. Closing an account requires contacting the town at least 2 business days before the end date so a meter reading can be scheduled. Final readings are not scheduled on weekends or holidays.

Reservoir water, irrigation and hydrant flushing

Drinking water is pulled from the Warrenton Reservoir and treated at the town water treatment facility.

Lawn irrigation systems must meet legal installation requirements, and improperly installed systems could lead to water service termination. Water main hydrant flushing is done annually, typically in the spring and fall.

Trash, recycling and large items

Town refuse collection runs two days a week, with each street on either a Monday and Thursday or a Tuesday and Friday schedule. Trash must be bagged, in containers and curbside before 6 AM on the scheduled day. Regular collection is for household refuse only; large items, furniture, paints, fuel, batteries and similar items have to be taken to the Fauquier County Landfill by the resident.

Curbside recycling is weekly and set out by 6 AM on Wednesday in the town-issued 18-gallon blue bin. The recycling rules accept plastics labeled #1 or #2, aluminum and tin, but not glass, and corrugated cardboard goes beside the bin rather than in it. A 24-hour drop-off container for mixed office paper is at the back of the Public Works Facility at 360 Falmouth Street.

Limbs, leaves and the Corral Farm Collection Site

Limbs and branches no larger than 8 inches in diameter are picked up curbside on Thursdays and Fridays. Tree trimmings cut by tree companies or contractors are not picked up.

Leaf collection takes place in the second and third weeks of November and December, with leaves raked to the street line by 7 AM on the scheduled day.

The Corral Farm Collection Site on Bingham Road in Warrenton accepts household trash, bulk waste and recycling from Fauquier County residents, from 7am to 3pm Sunday through Saturday. Hazardous waste, mattresses, tires, brush and similar chargeable items are not accepted on Sunday. Household hazardous waste is accepted from Fauquier County residents only, at the same site, in limited daily quantities; materials from businesses are not accepted.

Circuit Rider bus, school enrollment and library cards

The Circuit Rider bus, run by Virginia Regional Transit, provides weekday and Saturday service within the town.

Fauquier County Public Schools enroll students through online registration.

Library cards for Fauquier County Public Library are available to county residents and to residents of areas with borrowing agreements. Proof of address such as a driver's license or ID with a current street address is needed, and a parent or legal guardian signs for applicants under 18.
