Moving to West Palm Beach: who to call and what the city asks.

West Palm Beach, the county seat of Palm Beach County, runs a Vegetation Amnesty Program each spring, usually in April or May, when residents can put out large piles of yard waste at no charge. The City also offers a one-time free collection of large quantities of moving boxes within 30 days of moving in. When a hurricane watch or warning is issued, the City says not to put materials at the curb.

Commercial vehicles over 10,000 pounds in residential neighborhoods

The City bars parking commercial equipment in residential areas and says no commercial vehicle over 10,000 pounds may be parked in a residential neighborhood.

Residential Parking Permit zones and City garage permits

Neighborhoods can ask the City for a Residential Parking Permit zone. Once a zone exists, residents showing a valid permit may park there without being held to posted time limits. City garage permits for residents who do not have parking at their building cost $80.00 plus tax.

Moving boxes and the one-time free collection

The one-time free box collection is for large quantities of moving boxes, and it applies within 30 days of moving in. Call ahead; the boxes must be empty, broken down and tied.

Bulk pickup: 3 items at the curb

The City picks up bulk items from single family homes once a week, up to 3 items at the curb. More than 3 items needs a special pickup for a fee, arranged by emailing publicworks@wpb.org or calling (561) 822-2075.

Mattresses and box springs, sofas, and large and small appliances count as bulk items. Items with Freon, such as refrigerators and air-conditioners, go out on your yard waste pickup day.

Each garbage can is assigned to one address, so leave it and the recycling bins at the old address when you move. At the new address, call Customer Service at (561) 822-2075 or submit a service request if there is no can. The Solid Waste Authority provides residential recycling bins at no charge to City of West Palm Beach residents; request them on the SWA website.

Household hazardous waste

Paint, pool chemicals, pesticides and cleaning fluids count as household hazardous waste, which must not go in the garbage cart. The City points residents to the Solid Waste Authority and Waste Management for disposal options.

Palm Beach County schools, library cards and pet tags

The Palm Beach County School District registers new families online, or in person at the zoned school. Admissions can be reached at 561-434-8197. New students need two proofs of residence in Palm Beach County, a record of immunizations and a record of physical.

The Palm Beach County Library System issues free cards at any of its locations to residents of many county municipalities. Bring photo identification and proof of current address, such as a lease, deed or Florida driver's license.

Dogs and cats 4 months and older need a current rabies vaccine and a county license tag. Tags cost $15 for sterilized pets and $75 for non-sterilized pets.

Property tax bills and the Property Appraiser

Property taxes are payable November 1 to March 31 each year. The Tax Collector mails bills to the address on file with the Palm Beach County Property Appraiser's Office. Rental tax applications and licenses
