Local services and rules

Moving to Novi: who to call and what the city asks.

The City of Novi does not provide winter maintenance on Haggerty Road, Eight Mile Road, Napier Road, Pontiac Trail, Fourteen Mile Road, I-96, I-696, I-275, and M-5. Novi Community School District boundaries are not the same as the City of Novi boundaries, so a Novi address does not by itself confirm the district. And effective September 21, 2026, the Novi Recycling Drop-off Site is closed because of reconstruction of Lee Begole Drive.

Snow events on residential streets

During a snow event, the City asks residents to remove their cars from residential streets if possible, so crews can plow curb to curb. After the plows, the sidewalk rule applies: within forty-eight (48) hours after each snow accumulation of two (2) inches or more, the owner or occupant must remove the snow from the adjacent public sidewalk.

The 95-gallon and 65-gallon carts, bulk pickup and yard waste

Household furniture, a mattress and box spring, or a refrigerator are picked up at no additional cost. Priority Waste takes the call to schedule, and pickup happens on the regular collection day.

Novi residents receive a 95-gallon trash cart and a 65-gallon recycling cart, and can request additional carts from Priority Waste. Residents place garbage and recycling in their carts by 7:00am on collection day, and carts are to be removed that evening.

Recycling is collected on the same day as trash pickup, only from the recycling cart provided to each residence.

Yard waste is collected once per week from the first Monday in April through the second week of December, in paper bags or reusable containers no larger than 35 gallons. Free yard waste stickers are available from the Novi Department of Public Works or the Novi Civic Center.

The Southfield Recycling Drop-Off Site and RRRASOC events

With the Novi site closed, residents are asked to use the Southfield Recycling Drop-off Site instead. It is at 20000 W. Eight Mile Road and is open seven days per week during daylight hours. It does not accept Styrofoam or electronics.

Novi residents can attend any RRRASOC Household Hazardous Waste event, and all of those events are on Saturdays. Electronic waste is also accepted at them.

Water and sewer billing

The City bills water at $4.65 per 1,000 gallons of usage for bills rendered after 8/2/26. Water and sewer billing can be searched and paid online. For questions about water or sewer rates, the City lists 248-347-0440.

The City's New Resident page

The New Resident page lists four essential first steps: Set Up Utilities, Update Your Address, Register to Vote, and Own a Dog (dog licensing).

Voter registrations are accepted at the City Clerk's Office during regular business hours. In the 14 days before an election, voters register in person at the City Clerk's Office with proof of residency.

Michigan law requires dogs over four months old to be licensed, and Novi directs residents to buy the license through Oakland County. Oakland County Animal Control is at 248-452-9890.

SMART routes 305, 740, and 805 and the Novi digital library card

SMART route expansions are in place; for Novi, routes 305, 740, and 805 have expanded service.

A Novi digital library card can be registered for online by applicants who do not already have a Novi library card.

Free floodplain determinations

The City of Novi Community Development Department offers free floodplain determinations; call 248-347-0415 or visit the first floor of the Civic Center.
