Moving to Romulus: who to call and what the city asks.

Romulus is a city in Wayne County, Michigan. Residents may be permitted up to 3 garage sales per year, each for 3 consecutive days, and the citywide garage sales are not counted in the annual limit. Residents may also petition the City Council to close streets for block parties, and closed streets must be reopened by 9 p.m. or dusk, whichever is earlier.

Snow emergencies, plow routes and street sweeping

A snow emergency may be declared by the Mayor when 3 inches or more of snow has fallen, and vehicles left on city streets may be ticketed or towed. Parking is unlawful on any street with three inches or more of accumulated snow or ice, or during emergencies declared by the mayor.

On the snow plow route map, roads highlighted in orange and all expressways are maintained by Wayne County, other highlighted roads by the city, and roads not highlighted are privately maintained.

Street sweeping in subdivisions runs from May through September, weather permitting, and is not provided along Wayne County roads.

Trash and recycling carts

Rubbish removal is provided by a private commercial company contracted by the city; Waste Management Inc. is the contact for questions. Each residence is provided one 96-gallon trash cart with a green lid and one 64-gallon recycling cart with a yellow lid.

Carts go to the curb by 6 am or no earlier than 4 pm the night before the collection day. Curbside recycling is picked up on the same day as regular rubbish removal.

Pickup of occasional excess bagged material outside of either cart is arranged by contacting Waste Management.

Yard waste, hazardous materials and Woodland Meadows Landfill

Yard waste such as grass clippings and small branches is collected between the second full week of April and the second full week of December by a waste disposal company contracted by the city.

Household hazardous materials such as antifreeze and gasoline are not accepted at the curb; Wayne County Department of Environment offers Household Hazardous Waste Collection at various county locations several times a year.

Residents buy a landfill voucher in person at the Treasurer's Office before dumping at Woodland Meadows Landfill.

Water and sewer bills

Water and sewer bills are due within 21 days from the postmarked date of billing. Payments can be made in person at City Hall Monday through Friday from 8 am to 4 pm, except on holidays. A final water bill needs at least 24 hours of notice to schedule an appointment to read the meter.

Welcome Packet and city offices

New residents are asked to come by City Hall to pick up the City Welcome Packet.

The Treasurer's Office collects property taxes, permit fees, license fees and program fees. The City Clerk is the elections administrator and conducts all local, county, state and federal elections.

Animal Control enforces the animal ordinances, including rules on unlicensed dogs, dogs running at large and kennel licensing. The Department of Building and Safety performs occupancy and re-occupancy inspections on all residential, commercial and industrial buildings.

Romulus Community Schools and library cards

Romulus Community Schools serve the communities of Romulus and Inkster; the schools are Wick Elementary, Romulus Elementary, Halecreek Elementary, Barth Elementary, Romulus Middle School, Romulus High School, and Romulus Virtual Learning Center. The district's Address Locator shows which school a child will attend.

Library cards are available only to residents of Romulus and Huron Charter Township. An adult card application needs a picture of the front and the back of a state ID or state driver license to prove residency.
