Local services and rules

Moving to Fort Lauderdale: who to call and what the city asks.

Many Fort Lauderdale residents live in or near a Special Flood Hazard Area, where flooding may occur in heavy rainfall or a hurricane. During flash flood watches or warnings, residents may store vehicles at the Las Olas Garage or Riverwalk Center Garage at no charge, according to the city's severe weather parking page. Fort Lauderdale is the county seat of Broward County.

Bulk Trash Timing and the 10 Cubic Yard Limit

Bulk trash goes at the curb by 7 a.m. on pickup day, no earlier than 24 hours before the scheduled pickup. Items put out earlier, or left more than 24 hours after pickup, could result in a citation. Bulk piles may be no larger than 10 cubic yards, and all discarded items must come from the property itself, as the city's collection programs page lays out.

Residential Parking Permit Districts

Fort Lauderdale issues Residential Parking Permits for streets inside a residential parking permit district. On those streets only permit-holding residents may park, at the times and days set by the neighborhood.

Residential property owners in the neighborhood set the parking restrictions, and a permit does not guarantee available parking. The city lists districts in neighborhoods including Beverly Heights, Birch Park Beach Finger Streets and Colee Hammock. Questions go to the City Call Center at (954) 828-8000 or parkingservices@fortlauderdale.gov.

WM Carts and Curbside Collection

The City of Fort Lauderdale provides curbside solid waste and recycling collection to single family and multi-family properties with three or fewer units. WM (Waste Management) is the environmental services provider collecting trash, recycling, yard waste and bulk trash.

Carts go out by 7:00AM on collection day, no later than 6:00PM the night before. They sit at least 2 feet from other carts, cars, mailboxes, trees, storm drains and utility poles, and never in the bike lanes. The Neighbor Support Center at 954-828-8000 takes service requests, and the city interactive map shows a property's collection schedule.

Household Hazardous Waste Drop-Off Events

The city holds household hazardous waste drop-off events for residents. Accepted items include paint, motor oil, pesticides, pool chemicals, lithium batteries and propane tanks. Industrial waste and construction debris are not accepted.

Opening a City Water and Sewer Account

Water and sewer accounts are managed online through the City of Fort Lauderdale utility billing site, utilitybilling.fortlauderdale.gov.

To open a new residential or commercial utility service account, a Utility Service Application and Agreement is submitted by e-mail, fax, U.S. Mail or in person. A Utility Billing Account Representative can also be called at 954-828-5150.

New or reconnecting account holders provide a copy of settlement papers, a deposit and picture identification when applying for water service, according to the city's fees and legal information page. Residential account deposits are refunded to owners after one year if all payments were received on or before the due date.

Broward County Schools, Buses and Library Cards

To enroll a child in a Broward County public school, parents contact the school directly. A family finds the boundaried school for an address with the district school locator.

Broward County Transit (BCT) provides fixed route buses, express and community shuttles, and paratransit services in Broward County.

Broward County Library cards are open to anyone who lives, works, attends school or is visiting Broward County. An online Instant eCard gives access to eBooks, eAudiobooks, streaming movies and music, and the card number arrives by email.

Pet Rabies Tags and Voter Registration

Broward County requires every dog, cat and ferret to have a rabies vaccination, and dogs and cats must wear a Broward County Pet Rabies Registration Tag on the collar.

The Broward County Supervisor of Elections handles voter registration for Fort Lauderdale residents.
